For this month of May, we have an Elias Toufexis interview, who voiced Adam Jensen in the award winning game, Deus Ex: Human Revolution. I originally met him at an event and we both agreed to have an interview for KHPlanet. We discuss the character of Adam Jensen and Elias’ acting career. Plus, we now know of two new games being in the works with Elias’ involvement. Could Deus Ex: Human Revolution 2 be announced at E3?Chris: Welcome to KHPlanet and congratulations on the success of Deus Ex: Human Revolution! For fans of the series, do you believe there will be another entry in the series?Elias Toufexis Interview
Elias: Thanks. Simply because I like to work, I’m truly hoping for another one! I’m hoping for another win with Adam Jensen!
Chris: Can you explain Deus Ex’s story line to the readers who haven’t played the game yet?
Elias: It’s actually a really complex story… the crux of it is that you play Adam Jensen who gets attacked and must be kept alive through robotic augmentations. You go through the game trying to find out why and [the player uses Adam’s] augments to do cool ass stuff.
Chris: How would you describe the character of Adam Jensen?
Elias: He’s whatever you want him to be… also he’s pissed off.
Chris: If Adam Jensen was to cameo in another video game (like Ezio in Soul Calibur V), what would you choose him to be in if it was your decision?
Elias: Mortal Kombat…he’d whip Sub Zero’s ass.
Chris: Will Adam Jensen make an appearance in Square Enix’s Kingdom Hearts series?
Elias: You tell me man! I only work here!
Chris: How did you break into the industry? Our last guest, Bryce Papenbrook, was thrown into the saddle by his father when he was nine years old. What spurred you on to begin acting professionally for film at the age of 29 when many other actors begin at a very young age?
Elias: I worked in theatre for a long time but I always wanted to be in film and television (and now performance capture video games etc). My first feature at 29 wasn’t by design it just happened that way.
Chris: What advice would you give to people who want to act for a living?
Elias: Get used to rejection. I make my living as an actor. I don’t have to do anything else for money and I probably am told no 14 out of every 15 auditions. So you have to be resilient. Especially when starting out. Take classes. Meet people. Act for free as much as possible at first. Just keep going.
Chris: Which do you prefer? Live action or voice acting? Other than not using body language with voice, how do they differ?
Elias: These days with video games it’s no longer just voice acting. It’s all done the way a film like Avatar is done. Full on body and face performance capture. Voice work is a part of it of course but it’s a lot more like film these days. Straight up voice work is fun because you can wear sweat pants to work.
Chris: What has been your favorite project to work on?
Elias: In video games? Deus Ex and Splinter Cell. On Television? Smallville, Supernatural, Alphas…there are a bunch.
Chris: What are you currently working on?
Elias: You can check me out in the new ABC show Zero Hour (next year)… I’m a villain throughout Season 2 of Syfy’s Alphas.. and I’m working on two video games that I’m not allowed to tell you anything about.
