This was not how I wanted to start my day, but around 4 AM Japan was hit with a category 8.9 earthquake and later a tsunami that killed hundreds. My heart goes out to all the citizens of Japan that were affected by this disaster. The full article with all the details is here: Hundreds killed in tsunami after 8.9 Japan quake - Yahoo! News

I've known about this all day and have been following every bit of news I can find since I found out. An estimated 544 person death toll, one missing train, and one missing boat with 100 passengers have been reported. So far I can find no news about my host family and friends or anything about the area they live in but the reports are all dangerously close and its beginning to make me worry. I can not contact any of my loved ones in japan because of this. If anyone comes across news about adachi-ku tokyo please let me know.

I heard about it this morning when I went in to work. This was especially scary for us because the mom of two of our kids here at school is over in Japan, and her husband hadn't been able to reach her. Turns out she's fine, but stranded because the airport is under 3 feet of water.

I haven't heard a lot of specific news, but my understanding is that areas that were previously safe are now becoming dangerous because of the continuing aftershocks. We all just have to hope for the best, I suppose. I believe Hawaii made it through the tsunami relatively easily, so that's one thing to be grateful for.

Yeah, this really sucks. I saw it on the morning news and was just shocked. And a few minutes ago, I saw some videos of what happened there; It was scary seeing vehicles and buildings being washed away so easily.

~Forgive my double posting~ Another update on the disaster in Japan, it seems that a nuclear plant has exploded today but it appears that everyone was evacuated in time safely. Also thousands have been reported missing since the earthquake hit yesterday and the death toll continues to rise as rescuers continue to search for people in the aftermath. If you still want to donate money to the Japan Relief effort just follow the link I posted above, also the link to the article about the nuclear plant explosion is here: Blast at Japan nuke plant; thousands missing - Yahoo! News

Minamisanriku was completely washed away, 10,000 people missing from that town.
3 Nuclear plants are having troubles as of today.
Supplies for the homeless are running short.

Can be followed on BBC News

To my understandings Hope, though Tokyo was hit, not too much damaged has happened there. A few cracks in the road, some of the weaker older buildings didn't survive there.

This hits close to me due to an old friend from early grade school and early pre-education who lived here in the U.S. for four years (her father worked for a sony plant an hour away which closed down a while back) is over in Japan. She was my best friend and though it's been about 10 years since I've seen her, she's always been in my heart. I hope she is ok.

My heart and prays go out to everybody in Japan and I hope to try and come up with some community fund raiser this week. I wouldn't even mind spending my summer in Japan.

So everybody also understands, though Japan was/is in a little bit better shape than Haiti, this was a stronger and deadlier Earthquake than the one in Haiti last year. Plus Haiti didn't have to deal with a tsunami like Japan.

Here are a few different pictures and a link to a video(and if you continue watching, several videoes) from cnn.

i was watching Fox News and they played this one graphic showing how the wave was almost as fast as a jet, that's just really scary. They also showed the waves jst running buildings over like they were nothing, it was so scary and horrible i had to stop watching.
