Classic Rock

Depending on where you look, 'Classic Rock' is said to have been music from the 60's and 70's. I personally also include the 80's because there was some amazing bands that came in during that decade. Honestly, it was mainly during the 90's when grunge music and rap became mainstream.

Anyways, I wanted to know how many members enjoy listening to 'Classic Rock' ? Who are your favourite bands from those eras ? Is there any particular songs that you can't stop listening to ? In general, anything relating to 'Classic Rock' could fit in this thread.

On a side note, I feel as though I'm the only person on the forum that listens to Led Zeppelin, so if there's anybody else who thinks that the band is awesome, let me know. I'd appreciate it ;)

    -----------------

I figure that I should start this one off.

My iTunes gallery is almost purely made up of classic rock music. I grew up listening to these songs, my dad used to play guitar in a band back in the 70's and 80's, so it's something that I've always been exposed to. I personally find that the music is intoxicating and I couldn't imagine not listening to it.

My favourite rock bands include :

The Beatles - I particularly love the song Blackbird, but The Beatles have a lot of great tunes.
Bon Jovi - Bed of Roses is my all time favourite
    Fleetwood Mac
Guns N' Roses - I Include this band, mainly because their best album Appetite for Destruction came out in 1987.
    Led Zeppelin
    Queen
    Rush
    Whitesnake
And probably more that I have forgotten.

I personally love all of the bands listed above. I've been listening to an insane amount of Zeppelin and Queen lately, which is why I decided to create this thread. Some really awesome songs by these two artists include :
    Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
    Under Pressure - Queen
    Somebody to Love - Queen
The Rain Song - Led Zeppelin
    Kashmir - Led Zeppelin
Achilles Last Stand - Led Zeppelin (Favourite Zeppelin song)
Houses of the Holy - Led Zeppelin
Over the Hills and Far Away - Led Zeppelin
    Ramble On - Led Zeppelin

Also, who here likes GN'R ? I'd like to know if you prefer the older band arrangement or the newer one that Axl has formed ? The newer GN'R isn't too bad, in my opinion, but the band isn't the same without both Axl and Slash. They had this amazing dynamic between them (or atleast it seemed that way until it all fell a part) and I wish that they would have some reunion tour. Frankly, Axl doesn't seem to be budging on that one >_<

I really enjoy classic rock as well, though it's more of a passive kind of love in that I'm not really knowledgable about bands and who's in 'em and stuff- I just hear songs on the radio or out of my parents' collection and know that I like 'em. So I'm kind of a poser, I suppose. >_<

But anyhow, I like music by

    The Beatles
Queen (and I agree with you about Under Pressure- that song is brilliant)
    Bon Jovi
    AC/DC
    Boston
    Aerosmith
    Foreigner
    Heart
    Elton John
    David Bowie

And probably others, but those are the ones that came to mind.

    So yeah.

Kitty, we seem to be the only classic rock duo on this site.

Pssh, you're no poser. There's several bands in which I don't know many things about the members in them, or that I only know the lead singers name. I refer to it as knowing only the important people and sometimes it so happens that nobody is that important; Only the music is nice to listen to ;)

Wow, I completely forgot Aerosmith, Elton John and Heart !

Heart is one of those bands in which I am clueless on who the members are. I frankly know a lot of songs by Heart (whenever I'm listening to the radio and a Heart song comes on, I can't help but sing), but I've never taken the time to even know the lead singers name. She just has a lovely voice. I just googled them and I didn't know that there were two sisters in the band

I was just watching Elton John on youtube the other day ! I love his song Candle in the Wind and I wanted to hear the version he made for Princess Di for her funeral. I was too young to know who she was, (I think I was 3 when she died (?) ) but she always sounded like a lovely and caring person. My mom and I were also having an Elton John phase last weekend where we were listening to most of his albums.

As for Aerosmith, the only member I know is Steven Tyler. When I read their name in your post, the first thing that ran through my mind was Dream on

Under Pressure is definitely one of my all time favourites. It's phenomenal. The part of the song that I enjoy the most is nearing the end when it says :

'Cause love's such an old fashioned word
And love dares you to care for
The people on the edge of the light
And love dares you to change our way of
    Caring about ourselves
    This is our last dance
    This is our last dance
    This is ourselves
    Under pressure

It's breathtaking and it rings true.

Boston and The Beatles are great
I also like that song "American Pie"
I think the guy who wrote it was Don something.

That's a lovely way of putting it.

God, that makes me feel so freaking old. Princess Di died in August '97 (thank you, Google), so I was 11 at the time. The version of Candle in the Wind that Elton John wrote for her is the only version of the song I think I've heard, now that I think of it.

Somehow or another, I've actually managed to pick up that the two sisters are Ann and Nancy Wilson, though I couldn't tell you which is the lead singer. I can't help belting out their songs when they come on the radio- they are just too catchy to me.

Agreed. But even more than that, it's just a damn catchy song. It's got one of those beats I can recognize right from the minute it starts playing. And just the vocals and everything. Gah.

    Such a shame, too.

Don McLean. This is a song that I don't exactly like, but can't help singing along badly to anyhow (though to be fair, every time I sing, I do it badly).

First you're a poser, now you're old; Kitty you're quite harsh on yourself. You're in the prime of your life ~! I was right about how old I was though. If Princess Di died in August '97 that would make me 3 years old since I was born in January '94. As for Elton John, I only heard the "Englands Rose" version twice, once a year ago when my mom showed me and just the other day. He wrote the original actually for Marilyn Monroe, which is the version I have on my iPod. When I was listening to Princess Di's I was trying to sing a long, but the lyrics were changed too much >_<

I was actually reading the comments on Youtube (I always find myself looking at them) and some people think that Candle in the Wind will be reworded again when Elton John dies. That would be so nice, but I questioned why that conversation was coming up. Elton John isn't nearing his death bed yet.

Especially when the Swiffer Duster commercials come on. What about love ? Don't you want someone to care about you ?

I know what you mean. Mind you, everytime I listen to it people always, for the first few seconds of the song, think that I'm listening to Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice |:
Queen was the first one with the beat and they made a spectacular song; I don't know why Vanilla Ice pops up in their mind's before them.

    Bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry~

I decided to look up this song and apparently there's a satanic message behind it. Why is it that our generation has to analyse songs in such negative ways =\

I was gonna say something like this, but then I decided I didn't even want to bring Vanilla Ice into the conversation, lol. The worst is when I think Under Pressure is coming on, and they trick me and I have to listen to Ice Ice Baby instead because I'm too lazy to switch stations. <_<

Sad that people jump to Vanilla Ice before Queen. Because Queen is awesome.

Now I need to look this up, because seriously? I don't see how they can get a satanic message out of that. But then, people can find Satan in anything if they look hard enough, I guess.

Now that you say that, I suppose I have heard that version of the song as well. But definitely I hear the Princess Di version more often. Not that I really listen to that much, either. It's a beautiful song, but I'm more of a Bennie and the Jets kinda girl.

I enjoy most rock. Seldom do i find bands i dont like

    Foreigner
    Boston
    The Doors
    Guns n Roses
    The outlaws

    Are my favorites though

That happens to me all the time ! I get all prepared to do my mad Queen vocals and then Vanilla Ice starts to rap. It's a terrible curve ball that I never seem to be braced for. Queen is extraordinary and I love the sound of the entire band, so it's a big let down. Speaking of Under Pressure, I feel like listening to it now.

I find that they keep going on about several of the Classic Rock bands having satanic messages in their songs. I don't ever believe that the message is intended by the music artist, people just like stirring the pot and causing drama. Mind you, I can't defend the Rolling Stones on that one because they have a song called Sympathy for the Devil. However, they may have wanted to seem satanic for publicity. You never know.

Bennie and the Jets ! I'm tempted to make a sing-a-long now. I love that song, it actually reminds me of 27 Dresses ;)

I've never listened to Boston, I feel like I'm out of a loop at times. Mind you, I love Foreigner, The Doors and Guns N' Roses so I should perhaps check them out sometime. I mean, they all made it on your list for a reason.

    Flash Delirium Indie Rokkers

That's jumping to conclusions a bit, considering they're one of the most well known bands of all time. Needless to say, I listen to them from time to time.

My favorite artists from this era are by far Simon & Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, The Smiths (I'm counting the 80's as well), Velvet Underground/Lou Reed, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, The Doors, Neil Diamond, The Beatles, and Elton John. There's a lot of overplayed crap from these decades that just really irk me, like The Rolling Stones and The Eagles.

Led Zeppelin is well known, but I wasn't sure if there were many people on the forum who liked their songs. I appreciate the fact that you listen to them from time to time; I don't ever get to talk to others about Led Zeppelin. It seems as though when I talk to people about Led Zeppelin, they say they love them, but then they only know the song Stairway to Heaven. Don't get me wrong, Stairway to Heaven is spectacular and unique, but Led Zeppelin is more than just that one song. Definitely it would be in the top 10, but I find that songs like Kashmir, Houses of the Holy, Achilles Last Stand etc are amazing aswell. Kashmir is a work of art; it actually reminds me of Aladdin because of that "sandstorm" feel it has. The overall feel to Houses of the Holy draws me in and the vocals of Achilles Last Stand is what sells it for me.

I'm one of those people who can't listen to a band unless if I like the tone to the lead singer's voice. If there's some strange scratchy presence in his/her voice, it completely throws me off. Led Zeppelin is one of my favourites though because of that blues feel that's present in Robert Plant's vocals. It's electrifying and exhilarating.

The Rolling Stones more than likely get played a lot now because of Jagger. He seems to be popular in the mainstream from time to time.

    Led Zeppelin
    Kiss
    Aerosmith
    AC/DC
    Warrent
    Metallica
    Bon Jovi
    Def Leppard
    REO Speedwagon
    Foreigner
    Van Halen
    Rob Zombie
    Alice Cooper
    Ozzy Ozborne

These are the bands that I grew up listening to. I'm sure I left a few out. My dad was kind of a junkie though and so was my mom. Some of these are a little bit more recent than others I realize but I still count them as classic. Kiss is one of my favorite bands of all time.
