What the hell was the point of that? In the debates section, try to post with a little more meaning, please.

that didn't make sense at all crossfault, and you clearly didn't read any of the FIVE paragraphs i typed (haha). plus, rappers, educated or not, talk like that (but not to the extent you put it in) because it's a part of their hip-hop culture. and just so you know, only gangsta wannabes talk with that much slang.

    Ugh...

All this 'debate' has turned into is a series of musical stereotypes.

Rock fans: In fact, a very small percentage of rap is about whores, sex, or gang fights. Matter of fact, its more common to see that in rock. Take Three Days Grace. Seriously, how many of you have seriously listened to the song 'Pain'. It's about butt sex for crying out loud. No ****ing joke. Listen to it. 'Pain! Without love. Pain! Can't get enough!'. It's about pointless, shallow, sex.

Rap fans: A very small percentage of 'emo rock' actually has to do with cutting yourself. For the most part it has to do with being yourself, and giving a grand 'ol f-off to society. But, rap usually has to do with the certain rappers life story. That's where it gets mistaken as only about whores, sex, and gangs. It usually has to do with what happened to the artist as a kid, or what he/she thinks the state of the world has come down to.

In short, rock is about rebellion. Whats new? Rap is usually political. Same as it has always been.

But I will have to agree with Al, that Rap music usually does seem a bit simplistic... and some rock today just sucks. Big balls.

I voted I don't care, because while I usually listen to rock, I do have some Hip-Hop and Rap on my playlist.

Musically, rap is pretty simplistic. Its essentially a repeated sample or beat with a few tweaks here or there. This, I believe is what makes rap good though. The rap itself is what a true rapper wants his/her listeners to hear and the beat just accompanies the rapper's song--the beauty lies in the contrast between the repeated music and the changing flow of the lyrics, since music (and most other arts too) revolve around contrast.

Like I've said before, lyrically, it's a whole different story with rap when it's done right. Listen to songs like the Seed 2.0 by the Roots or any song by Lupe Fiasco. The metaphors, puns, and wordplay quality rappers use/do is just amazing--you actually have to read their lyrics over a few times and analyze them to get the true meaning of what the artist is trying to portray.

P.S: I'm pretty thrilled that Lupe is being played on mainstream radio stations right now. Finally, real rap for the public to hear.

I'm in complete agreement with this. Rap, if done right, is just like that. It's all about the lyrics. Contry is actually similar in this regard. There's less unique between the various songs in terms of the background music. Pick any country song, I can guarantee you'll find another one that's almost identical. The lyrics are what is important. Incidentally, it's one of the main reasons I prefer rock to country as well as rap, though in the case of country it's also way too depressing too much of the time.

As you sad, music, and most great art, is based off contrast. I'm a fan of musical contrast. I like the contrast between the various instruments. The dynamics. The pitches. The tempo. Melody and countermelody. It's also why I listen to my music softer than most. The louder you turn up the music, the more you limit this contrast (there are scientific reasons for this, but I don't have time to explain them).

Rap isn't bad, it's just a style that appeals to me less than others. Or rather true rap that is. Mainstream rap, for the most part, is just this generation's version of bubblegum. And even then, just like I find a few country songs I like, every once and a while, I find a rap song that I like. It's not my preference in music, but I won't shun the style for that. If it's a good song, it's a good song, regardless of what style it is.

    I like this topic..

    anyways
since rap evolved mostly from spoken verse its just that, you only need a simple beat
as long as the poet has you thats all that matters
just as in any song, hear the message and it changes anything
most mainstream crap has lost its good message
about real life on the streets, survival, broken people, ect.
mostly flowing from how bad things are to how their trying to make it right in their own way

most mainstream stuff is now gloating about all the stuff you have and how many girls you can get

I love rap(and all other music besides country basically..) but mostly the older stuff and the stuff I write myself(note: its not my only styling of music to write)

That's actually not true. Rap doesn't ONLY encompass drugs, sex and violence. You haven't listened to much rap if that's what you think. lol

Anyway, I don't care about rap much. Not that I dislike it, but it just isn't my style. I prefer a nice guitar riff or two in my music.

Listen to some Lupe Fiasco. He is one of the best rappers today that doesnt fall into the "Flo Rida, Lil Wayne" rap stereotype of lovin and bangin the rapper (although their songs are ok as well). His wordplay is phenominal, and he definitely is one of the most lyrical artists out there. We aren't all like Soulja Boy I promise.

P.S. Tupac didn't just have the throne, he took it with him.

I don't like rap at all! I'm more of an r&b person, though I listen to the kingdom hearts soundtrack most of the time! :)

Zenrot i agree with you whole-heartedly. These days all Lil Wayne and Flo-Rida wanna talk about is you know what. lol. However on the other side Lupe Fiasco talks about the realness inside people and true events that every and any type of person can relate to.

Don't really want to ponder too much on this but I hate RAP. Not because of the style or type of music but because of what modern day rap has become. Too much swearing, too much talk about women and sleeping with them etc etc.

Plus I just like a variety in music which unfortunately RAP does not provide.

I don't like rap at all. Most of it is the same, but with different lyrics and a SLIGHTLY different beat. I am more of a country music person.

I love rap..it is like hardcore poetry. You can get your feelings out and try to connect with other people who feel the same. If you are feeling that woman, then rap about it.

Well, like other kinds of music, rap has depth and many different categories. Maybe if you looked into some rap that isn't main stream you might think differently.

He's right. A lot of rap that isn't mainstream actually is somewhat entertaining.
