New Kingdom Hearts Theory

Hello Kingdom Hearts fans! I just decided to post a new theory on why things work the way they do in the Kingdom Hearts story. I understand that this new theory doesn't follow the canon word for word, so bear in mind that it's just a possible interpretation. Let me know what you guys think!

So first of all, I thought these symbols were the most interesting to me as I traversed the Kingdom Hearts universe. Namely:

Falling from the Heavens: Sora is clearly seen at the beginning of Kingdom Hearts as "falling" from the heavens. I understand it was just a cinematic, but I think it does hold some significance. More on that later.

The Trinity: In the first Kingdom Hearts game, there were "Trinity" spots marked for Sora, Donald, and Goofy to jump on to gain some sort of treasure. I believe it holds significance simply because of the biblical allusion, but I'll get back on that later.

The Keyblade: It is described as "the most powerful weapon of all." It holds the power to access peoples' hearts and open them to darkness (as is seen when Riku uses the Keyblade to unlock Maleficent's heart to darkness). Such power seems only able to be controlled by a truly unique kind of person, but more on that later.

The Three Starting Choices: At the beginning of the first Kingdom Hearts game, Sora is presented with a choice between three different fates: the power of the Warrior, the power of the Guardian, and the power of the Mystic. I believe these each have powerful messages on what Sora, Donald, and Goofy really are, but more on that later.

Keyholes: Each world has a keyhole that, if sealed, keeps darkness away from the world for good (or at least for awhile). The fact that Sora, Donald, and Goofy have it within their power (through the Keyblade) to control the forces of Darkness and Light on each planet holds great significance. I'll elaborate more on this later.

Kingdom Hearts: Note the exchange below between Sora and Ansem at the end of the first Kingdom Hearts game:
[ "Kingdom Hearts! Fill me with the power of darkness! [...]"
"You're wrong. I know now, without a doubt. Kingdom Hearts... is light!"
    "Light... but why...?"
—Ansem, Seeker of Darkness and Sora ]
I believe that the fact Kingdom Hearts is "light" holds some pretty important implications for this theory. Sora, Donald, and Goofy ALL have their fates deeply intertwined with the ultimate fate of Kingdom Hearts, and I believe that holds some deep significance, but more on that in a bit (I promise, I'm almost done listing these lol)

Alright, so onto the explanation that ties these complex symbols into one comprehensive theory (I give myself a slight pause as I write this). So what we basically have here is this: there is a universe where Light and Dark play off each other on many different worlds. The ultimate source of Light is Kingdom Hearts. The Keyholes hold the power to change the balance of Light and Dark on each world. The Keyblade is used to do this. The person wielding this Keyblade is a person who fell from the heavens (Sora) and who teams up with two other characters to unknowingly preserve Light across the universe and banish Darkness. This trio seems to each have great powers of their own, and they use "Trinities" to unify their powers at different spots of their journeys (at least in the first Kingdom Hearts game). The three starting choices in the game (the Warrior, the Guardian, and the Mystic) each correspond to Sora, Goofy, and Donald, respectively. Just take a look at the dialogue each item has:

    "The power of the Warrior.
    Invincible courage.
    A sword of terrible destruction."
    -aka Sora with his Keyblade

    "The power of the Guardian.
    Kindness to aid friends.
    A shield to repel all."
    -aka Goofy with his Shield

    "The power of the Mystic.
    Inner strength.
A staff of wonder and ruin."
    -aka Donald with his Staff

So the Sword represents great power, the Shield represents great goodness, and the Mystic represents great knowledge. Each of these are very similar to the three common characteristics of God (all Powerful, all Good, all Knowledgable).

So what's my big conclusion here? It's simple: Sora, Donald, and Goofy are the Gods of the Kingdom Hearts universe.

Yea, I just said that, and I don't mean it metaphorically. I mean it literally. Sure, they don't always act like what we expect Gods to do. Goofy, Donald, and Sora are about as goofy as characters get. But does that mean they aren't powerful? Or aren't extremely good? Or aren't knowledgeable enough to tackle the most malevolent beings in their universe? The answer is that they ARE all these things. They're more than just goofy, they are GODS.

Think about it for a moment. Sora, Donald, and Goofy form the Trinity, which is a Biblical term for three Gods being one. They were given the Keyblade and use it to lock Keyholes on many different worlds, thus preserving Light. Also, if Kingdom Hearts is Light, and Sora, Donald, and Goofy are serving the Light by protecting it on so many worlds, then it follows that through their actions these three are vessels through which Kingdom Hearts works.

Think of that for a moment. The ultimate power of the Kingdom Hearts universe (Kingdom Hearts) works its agenda through three characters. Does that sound like a stretch to you? Well, it might. But the fact that Sora clearly stated that Kingdom Hearts is Light, and that Light is exactly what Sora's adventures lead him to protect (at great personal cost to him, Goofy, and Donald), then it follows that Sora was destined to work as an agent for Kingdom Hearts. He, and his two other friends, are the Gods of the Kingdom Hearts universe.

Need more proof? Well, let's look at how other characters treat Sora. Remember that exchange between the [SPOILERS AHEAD] Darkly Robed figure and Aqua in Birth By Sleep? It went something like this:

"Maybe he can set things right. A boy like him who touches so many hearts. He could open the right door, and save all those people whose lives I've managed to ruin. Still so many are still waiting for their new beginning, their Birth by Sleep. [And then a bunch of characters refer to Sora as they look out at the rest of their worlds]" - Black-Robed Man referring to Sora.

Well, there you go. Sora, along with Donald and Goofy (they all being one in the Trinity), is the God who must save everybody from endless Darkness. Sora can give everybody their new beginning by touching them with Light, which is what he's all about.

The Birth By Sleep title itself caught my eye. It can easily refer to the practice of baptizing someone completely in water. Before your head falls below the surface of the water, your eyes close as though you're falling into the last "sleep" of your former life, and then you reawaken as a new person when you're lifted above the water's surface once more. Aqua's former life was filled with living in the Realm of Darkness, and Sora can help lift her into a new life, a new beginning.

(Note: I am NOT saying the Trinity or Baptism by Immersion are correct or wrong doctrines. Please just bear with me as I'm only using these doctrines since they relate to religion. Please don't get angry over this)

I'm not saying Sora's baptizing anyone in Kingdom Hearts, but I do think he's doing something similar to it. In baptism, there's the religious idea that this act helps save someone. It goes along the same lines in the Kingdom Hearts universe. That line again: "Still so many are still waiting for their new beginning, their Birth by Sleep." Sora must be the one to liberate Aqua and many others from Eternal Darkness, since he and his two companions are the Gods and Light of the Kingdom Hearts universe (Again, please do not think I am endorsing any one religious view. I am not).

Not only that, but Sora's divinity can be attributed to the fact that we see him falling from a place we normally associate with divine presence: the Heavens. He's falling from them at the beginning of the first game.

So let me know what you guys think of this. I know it's different, and it never expressly says this in the Kingdom Hearts Universe, but I definitely think it's a valid interpretation of what's going. Thank you for having the patience to read through all this :)

You theory is good, but still very weird,if you read your topic better you will realize that you are not referring to Sora,Donal and Goofy as gods, you are referring to them as angels that serve Kingdom Hearts, the actual God,and your theory is to KH1 based, like you never played the other games, but i know you did,u can even quote Blank Points and you can see along the story that Donald and Goofy are not that special,Sora is the special one,but you are forgetting Riku,i mean Master Riku, you should do more research on your theory and do more research but you see to have a creative mind and i aprecciated reading your topic, but your point of view is kinda 'weird, but Kingdom Hearts is too complex to our not-Tetsuya Nomura's minds

Very... religious in a sense. XD But this caught my attention anyway. Still, what would you have to say then about Darkness and those who belong in darkness.

True, you bring up a good point about Sora, Donald, and Goofy just being angels that serve Kingdom Hearts and not actually being Gods. Do you think it's possible that Kingdom Hearts could be something similar to the King of Gods (e.g. Zeus is the King God of multiple other Gods)? So Kingdom Hearts is the God of Gods to which the Gods Sora, Donald, and Goofy obey? I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just throwing that out there. It's just as likely that you're right and they would just be angels working for Kingdom Hearts (if this theory was correct, I'm not saying it is).

I also think you've got a good point about Master Riku. I'm not sure how he would fit into all this, he did after all embrace the darkness at one point in the games. Maybe he was meant to do that for a higher purpose, one that actually helped served Kingdom Hearts and the Light (But again, I'm basing this off the first Kingdom Hearts game, so I'm not really expanding into the other games as much as I should :/ ). Perhaps, in the first Kingdom Hearts game, Riku had to choose Darkness in order for Sora to choose Light. But that's just pure speculation on my part. Thank you for replying to my theory though! You bring up excellent points :)

Thank you for asking! Hmm, well, I remember this quote coming from Ansem, the Seeker of Darkness:

"All worlds begin in darkness, and all so end. The heart is no different. Darkness sprouts within it, it grows, consumes it. Such is its nature. In the end, every Heart returns to the darkness whence it came! You see, darkness is the Heart's true essence..."
    —Ansem, Seeker of Darkness

Now, I'm not saying he's right, but he's definitely one of the Darkest bosses you encounter in the series (he being Xehanort's Heartless). So I think he's trying to say Darkness is in opposition to Light, and they both (unbeknownst to him) in turn help each other grow and develop. Maybe it's a kind of Yin and Yang relationship- you can't have one without the other.

If I recall right, I believe there were Heartless in Kingdom Hearts towards the end of the first game. Maybe that's the dark spot in the white side of the Yin and Yang circle. Kingdom Hearts cannot be "Light" without having "Darkness" to make it exist. But again, this is just speculation on my part. Maybe Riku and Sora had to take sides in the first game to make the universe work- but again, that's just pure speculation. I could be wrong. Thank you for taking the time to read my theory though! I appreciate your response

Well your question opened a fork in my theory,Kingdom Hearts(KH) can be a Zeus like god or a God(Jewish/Christian) like god,but i think that the God like is better, because considering Sora a god, that's okay, but Donald and Goofy not so much, they are not as important as Sora or Riku,if they were,Party Dream Eaters wouldnt exist, and if we are taking this theory farther, even if it's just speculation,it's fun to come up with goofy theories to expose your point of view,we would have to bring Aqua,Terra and Ven to this, what do you think about them?

Hmm, well, I suppose all Keyblade-holders could potentially be Gods (or Goddesses). With Aqua, Terra, and Ven, they all were deeply involved with Darkness in Birth by Sleep, if memory serves me right. Let's see, [SPOILERS AHEAD] Terra's body became possessed by Master Xehanort, who (Xehanort) is by far one of the most dedicated students of the Darkness. So Terra's fate was deeply tied up with Darkness, he's right in the middle of it.

It's the same thing with Ven and Aqua- Aqua ends up trapped in the Realm of Darkness and Ven turns out to be part of why Vanitas exists (another extremely Dark character). So it would seem to me that each of these characters (being Ven, Aqua, and Terra) are basically Light, and Kingdom Hearts purposefully ties up their fates to be the white dots in the dark side of the universe (kind of like how it is with Yin and Yang). So their fates in Birth by Sleep were already set in motion by Kingdom Hearts to help balance the universe, to provide a little Light where there was almost entirely Darkness, at least with what happened during the events of Birth by Sleep.

Also, I find it significant that Ven tied up his heart with Sora's. It seems to suggest that all six of these characters are Gods, since their fates are all so deeply intertwined with each other. But again, that's just speculation on my part :)

As creative, new, and interesting as your theory is, i hope it is not a theory and more of an interpretation of how you yourself see the world of Kingdom Hearts, otherwise I think you are looking to hard into a game that was developed by the people who developed the Final Fantasy series.

Trinity is a group of three. Final Fantasy follows this as well. So Kingdom Hearts having a Trinity is not surprising.

Kingdom Hearts is not necessarily Light. Ansem called upon Kingdom Hearts and darkness emerge from the door. Sora did the same and Light emerged from it.

Plus the biggest ruiner of this theory is God must not have any darkness present around him. Sora, Donald, and Goofy are constantly battling darkness. Sora even became "darkness" in its truest form. Lastly, Kingdom Hearts is located in the Realm of Darkness.

According to Ansem, all hearts are born in darkness and there they must return. Which is true.

So no there are no Gods only mortals. Unless, you believe God is both darkness and light because KIngdom Hearts is truly God in the Kingdom Hearts Universe. It being the unity of all worlds and men, allowing the creation of a new world.

So Angel, what do you think Light and Darkness mean? (in the Kingdom Hearts universe) You could be totally right about all this, I just wanted to know what you thought

Oh, and thanks for reading through my theory, I appreciate it :)

    Pretty simple really.
    Light is Good.
    Darkness is Evil.

Nothing more to it. One is needed to balance the other.

Some, would say Riku is an example of darkness as good but Riku is a terrible example. In the first game, Riku was evil. His mind was clouded. He was literally possessed. Later on Riku uses darkness but for good obviously I am wrong about my above statement. NOT! Only because of Riku's light was he able to accept and control the darkness. Instead of fearing it. He gained the courage to accept it in Chain of Memories.

P.S. I find it funny my name is Angel while your talking about Angels and Gods.
It was quite long but I did enjoy it.

Hey Jr please do not double post.

As for the theory, I only read of if for time sake, and though it is interesting, it's more of your own personal interpretation. What Angel has gone on to shortly explain is the correct meaning for Kingdom Hearts. Good work though.

According to Master Xehanort, a being greater than human would be the person who opens the door to Kingdom Hearts.

    So superbeings are pushing it.

Going by Xehanort again, Sora and the others would be "defenders of the light".
Ansem Seeker of Darkness and the heartless etc would be "servants of darkness"

  15. EtherealSummoner

    EtherealSummoner Lamentations 3:22-26

Superbeings are not pushing it really since their strength do exceed that of a normal being with the power of a keyblade, even without it.

And as for the funny theory of God must not have darkness in them, I choose the Princesses of Hearts, the "7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit of God", all which carries "Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Fear of the Lord, Knowledge and Piety (Reverence)", attributes which represent a true person (Child of God in a biblical sense). The Princesses of Hearts represent these attributes and can help lead them to Kingdom Hearts for all of what they represent... which is almost like how the Triforce in The Legend of Zelda does that gives Strength, Courage and Wisdom to the one true person.

There are other knights, magicians, and keyblade wielders that can be passed down. Those capabilities are not beyond human.
But truly anyone can have a heart of pure light so anyone can receive "God's Gift"
