Kairi: Useless or Not?

Kairi, the main female antagonist in the KINGDOM HEARTS series, is a character we have all grew to love (or hate in some cases) has often been questioned about her relevance to the story. With some hardcore fans being pro Kairi , we find just as many fans being completely against the young Princess of Heart. Yet, why is this? Why is Kairi the only character of the three being question? In my opinion Kairi is completely useless. She served only two purposes in the entire series: 1) Being a PoH 2) Getting captured 95% of the time. Sora is a reactive character and also the main character of the seires. Riku is a proactive character and it just seems like Kairi is just, well just there. At times it feels like Nomura is just throwing her in roles because he, himself has no idea where she belongs. Kairi seems to be a struggling character, in really an already struggling series. Although, that is just my opinion lets take a brief look into Kairi's role in each game.

    KINGDOM HEARTS:

Kingdom hearts, the game that started it all and my personal favorite in the series. The simplicity and strength of the story was enough to keep me wanting more and to make it better it was meshed with the magic of Disney and Final Fantasy (A combination that no one thought would work, but it did). The reason why this game is my favorite, is because of the story. Back then, everything was simple. Two friends, Sora and Riku desperately chasing their goal, to save Kairi.

Not saying I hate her completely, that is far from true. I would even go as far as to say that Kairi is the reason why the first game was so amazing. Not because of her screen time or actions. It's because she was an excellent support character for both Sora and Riku, despite her having little to no screen time. It almost seemed like she kept the friendly competition between them, even though they followed different paths. Not to mention the ending in this game. We see Sora, finally getting what he wanted, his friends all back together, just to see them ripped away once more. The scene between Sora and Kairi at the end is almost heart breaking and too hard to bare. As Sora yells out: "Remember what you said before, I'm always with you too. I'll come back to you, I promise." their hands separate as Kairi responds: "I know you will." with great certainty. The screen then switches to a scene of our strong-willed PoH with tears in her eyes. Making us who felt that emotion wanting more. That alone could have been a great time to start developing Kairi as a character.

    KINGDOM HEARTS: CHAIN OF MEMORIES

This has to be my second favorite game of the series (because its the only "inbetween" game I enjoyed). The card-based battles system was amazing and brought something new yet, challenging to the game, with more strategic game play. Yet, Kairi did not appear in this game physically. Some may even say this is where she started decline. I don't believe so, at this point she still served as the light for both Sora and Riku in Castle Oblivion. Not to mention her connection with Namine. Although, I believe they could have given her a bit more of a key role in the game.

    KINGDOM HEARTS 358/2

Kairi did not play a major role in this game. She was seen in a few flashbacks. It is suggested around this time frame of the series she is still awaiting the return of Riku and Sora. Yet, her memories of Sora are very vague.

    KINGDOM HEARTS II

Kingdom Hearts II, the long awaited sequel to Kingdom Hearts. Takes place 1 year after the events of the original game. We find our selves playing as a mysterious boy Roxas. Who seems to have a connection with Kairi through Sora. Though, Kairi received more face time than she ever has in any other Kingdom Hearts game, her character was dull and boring. The lack of character development was almost unacceptable. At times, when the three finally reunited Kairi was kind of, well just there. There was nothing to her, all she did was, again get captured. Toward the end of the game, she found use by hitting a few heartless in the head with a keyblade that given to her by Riku. Most people thought it was good, but why was it necessary? They keyblades were supposed to be scarce around that time, now everyone can have it? It is kind of like they said "Give her less lines and a keyblade", because they have no where else to put her. It just seemed like a way to make Kairi a bit more relevant. Yet, she wasn't crucial to the story at all.

    KINGDOM HEARTS: BIRTH BY SLEEP

Chronologically the first game in the series, it shines a small glimmer of light on Kairi's mysterious past. Birth by sleep shows us a young Kairi, in her home world of Radient Garden. There she has an encounter with Aqua after being chased by a group o "unversed", in which she touches Aqua's keyblade and accidentally preforms the "Keyblade inheritance ceremony". Answering the question of "How Kairi received her keyblade." This gives us a bit of character development, but not enough for me to really care. (As I don't agree with her having a keyblade)

    KINGDOM HEARTS: DREAM DROP DISTANCE

While Kairi appeared in two different trailers for this game. She had very little relevance in it. Though, her future may look bright as during the secret ending of this game Yen Sid sends Riku to bring her to the Mysterious Tower, so she can start her Keyblade training so that they can complete the 7 defending lights army. This also giving her a chance to defend against the newly assemble Organization XIII. This almost promising a better character development with Kairi.

While I'm not the biggest Kairi fan, I wouldn't mind seeing her become a bit more relevant in the series (Since shes going to be there anyway). Maybe her receiving a keyblade is just the right spot for her. I would love to see the only original PoH develop into a character who is essential to the story, especially given her title as one of the Princesses of Heart.

Stay tuned for more character reviews, x3pic out!

    "main antagonist"
seems legit. anyway, i see where you're coming from. however, I believe kairi will have a major role in KH3. riku's training her, so she won't be completely useless

Main female, antagonist. I just hate Kairi.
I think its Yen Sid who is training her. I could be totally wrong.

so she won't be completely useless[/QUOTE]
Meh, lets hope not. Its just like, hey KAIRI you're captured. Now you're PoH. Now you're captured. Now you're free. Now you're captured. Now you have a keyblade..
    -__-, in that exact order.

man you really hate Kairi. Imagine if Sora's captured and Kairi saves him and defeats Master Xehanort herself

I then would hate her a bit less. I wouldn't really say I hate her, the fact is she needs to be put in more of a key role. She had something going for her in KH1 and even a bit in CoM. If they would have made her a bit more of a factor in KH2 and then gave her a keyblade I would feel differently. I mean she is the only PoH we see (most of the time). Let her be playable like Riku is. Maybe not even give her keyblade and have her develop some weird PoH power.

Kairi was fine in Kingdom Hearts. Chain of Memories is that her relevance is for Namine. KH2 is where I was ticked off honestly. THey could've made her temporarily playable but they did not. She was there to merge back with Namine and to be used to have Sora defeat more heartless.

Agreed, if not making her playable atleast give her a better role.

Kairi's a protagonist, not an antagonist. Though I suppose you could spin her as an adversary, given what a pain she is.

My views on Kairi have been expanded on in other threads, but I suppose my main thoughts are summed up in this:
It seems incredibly obvious to me that no one in the story writing/character development department has a clue what to do with this character. They let her drift too long without giving her much of a personality or skills, apparently hoping people would just like her because she's the main love interest, and now they're stuck, because anything they do now to make her interesting will just feel like the cop out it is. They ought to just kill her character off somehow, and then no one will have to worry about fitting her into the series again.

Oh please. They are not going to do that. Then they will have to find a way to make Sora upset and angry as to how she died and all of that and quite honestly, I think it would be more of a pain and an annoyance thana bittersweet, tear-dropping moment, seeing as to how Sora's personality is changing to be more... giddy and childlike. I do not mind the positive aspect... but yeesh. He's more like a 12 year old to me right now.

As Kitty pointed out before I could, Kairi is a protagonist. Antagonist usually means bad guy. Which is why Antagonize and Antagonist are spelt the same way, except with the last 3 letters being different.

They won't do that though. Nobody actually dies in KH. Ansem the Wise, who was supposed to have died in KH2, was revealed to be alive. Master Eraqus, who looked like he was killed by Xehanort, was hinted at still being alive. Even Maleficent and Pete probably survived what happened to them in Coded.

I feel as if Kairi is going to be more magic based and Yin Sid or maybe Mickey will be teaching her more because they use magic alot more than Riku. I thought she was a good character to move Sora and Riku forward on there adventures in the 1st game and COM. But in KH2 she wasnt really the "pull" so to speak for Sora because at the time he had got a new mission and he knew she was safe. Finding Riku and stopping heartless was his only concern it seemed like. I hope we see more of her in KH3(if it ever comes out) and it would be kinda cool to play with her a little bit. Like most people have been saying it seems like shes on the path to become another "Aqua" so to speak.

I Agree With that. I also feel that Kairi will be more of the Magic type like Aqua and will be showing up more in 3.

I agree with the magic idea, Xion and Namine are also both magic based and it'll be nice to have variety as a pose to all of them just using strength, especially if you get to play as Sora, RIku and Kairi.

Oh, I don't doubt that you're right. I've never thought that they would actually kill her off. But I still think they should, if only for an easy way to get her out of the picture, given they can't seem to figure out anything else to do with her.

I personally really like Kairi as a character. It's just that she seems to be the "weak-link" a lot. She often finds herself getting kidnapped or hurt or something along those lines. However, the Secret Ending of Dream Drop Distance really surprised me. I have a feeling she will prove her worth in KH3. I even have hopes that she'll be a playable character.

Thank you! finally someone who shares my opinion. The fangirls all seem to hate Kairi, why? I don't get it. Granted she doesn't get much character development, but i feel that's going to change in KH3!

With that in mind, does anyone have any guesses as to what her part of the story will be like? I'm talking, play style, exclusive spells/commands, will she get keyblade armor? Personally, with how Riku seems to be an amalgamation of Terra and Aqua's command/play styles and Sora has a more balanced version of Ventus', I think she'll play similar to Ventus (in terms of speed based attacks) and Aqua (in terms of higher levels of magic and maybe the doubleflight command.

Kairi, I felt was like an addition to the story itself, however, made the story always interesting. I like her. I can't wait to see what'd it'd be like to have her in KH3 because love was always part of the story. Without Kairi, Sora would basically have no adventure.

I wouldn't say that is true! The heartless would have attacked Destiny Islands regardless if Kairi was missing or not.

That's true but still. I feel like the game itself had a lot more to it because there was love involved. He had something to pursue.

Yeah, but I don't see how Sora searching for Kairi helped Kairi's development very much. Her capture was more of a plot device rather than for development.
