    This is more for me than you guys ;) Just kidding!

    All right, so have you guys heard about Duolingo? It is just a free app that helps you learn foreign languages. If so, do you find it really helps? One of my French professors at University recommended it to me because she said it is good for learning languages, but also practicing your second language if there are no native speakers around.

    I started using this app in January to learn Spanish. I honestly find that Spanish is a beautiful language and I would love to (ideally) be fluent before I die. Big goals, I know. Does anyone on the forum speak Spanish? Is anyone by any chance a native speaker?

    I speak two languages.
    First language: English
    Second language: French

    I started learning French was I was 5 years old, which is quite useful. I have been living in France for almost 7 months and so many people I run into think French is my first language. I have a different accent as I speak, so the Parisians all assume I am from Belgium (oddly…).

    Español no es mi idioma naitivo pero empenzé aprender español en el colegio y lo continué aprender en la universidad. En el año 2014, fui a España por cinco semanas para estudiar español. Qué genial que vives en Paris!

    But yeah, I speak a little Spanish. Duolingo is alright. Not really grammar oriented though.

    I am so glad I understood everything you wrote without need of a translator. It makes me feel like I am making some improvements!! Or it is because Spanish and French are close enough that it helps me out...

    Currently, I am learning the present tense for verbs, and I am hoping to be starting the past tense in a couple of months and the future shortly after that.

    Here I go with my little description of myself in Spanish:

    Soy una mujer baja y vieja jaja Tengo una camisa negra de Led Zeppelin y de pantalón de chándal rojo. ¡Vuelvo a Canadá le 3 de mayo! Quiero el verano...

    And that is how basic I am so far! It is an improvement though from knowing nothing :p
    We should practice together sometime!

    Expressions are a pain in the butt, but other than that it'll be way easier to you since you know French.

    No es verdad. Eres una jovencita. Y no hay articulo definitivo, le, en espanol. Tu eres tan Frances.

    You are my new sempai!! Thank you for the "le" comment... It is hard not to include French while trying Spanish!

    Watching telenovelas help. Sometimes I have no idea what's going on but I get so invested.

    Eep! A foreign language club! I should have searched the forums for gems like this when I joined here the first time.

    I grew up bilingual, learning English and Spanish simultaneously at school from Kindergarten on (thank you, Arizona school system). But when my family moved to Ohio, speaking Spanish became forbidden (thank you, super racist family).

    When I was 16, I was bored during the summer, and started learning Mandarin on my own. Of course, I couldn't talk to anyone in my new tongue, because my village is 98% white, 1.2% African-American, and 0.8% other for a reason (the whole super racist thing previously mentioned).

    After I graduated high school, I chose to forego college and just learn what I wanted to learn at my own pace, so I would buy textbooks and learning supplies online. And now I have a grasp on usage and a growing vocabulary of Italian, Russian, Icelandic, Korean, and Japanese. I also taught myself American Sign Language when one of my younger cousins was found to be deaf. And being able to pick up languages quickly, my family (the super racist members are dead now, and the rest are understanding...mostly) call on me to translate or teach.
