I've read in a few places that people think Axel was more "dark" (note the substitution vs. b.a.) in KH: Re: CoM than KH II. What do you think? Why?

maybe. chain of memories, to me, seems a little more dark than khII

Because of the severe plot twists? ...I thought that it was pretty weird when Axel decided to go after Zexion with Riku Replica. Didn't see that coming...

Because Axel was revealing more of his traitor side.

Huh. I guess so. I actually don't really understand a lot about Axel's motives; he's mysterious. Not that it's a bad thing... but it depends on how you look at it. I think that he's a traitor of the Organization not because of his actions against Vexen (he was under orders for that) or Marluxia (not under orders, but Marluxia and Larxene were plotting to gain control over the Organization, so they were technically also traitors), but because 1.) He attacks Zexion with Riku Replica for no reason other than his seemingly nonchalant reply about watching Sora and Riku being more interesting/entertaining than saving Zexion; and 2.) because he has ulterior motives, such as protecting Roxas from Sora by keeping Roxas' identity a secret.
So I guess here's my real question: is it dark to do what he did to protect someone (or to comply with orders), if that actually was what he was doing?

If ya want to know the truth. Axel originaly was supposed to be a bad guy, I mean pure evil. However they changed his character after COM so that he would be freinds with Roxas.

    In the end of kh2...

Axel actually sacrifices himself to save Sora from the Nobodies. I am sad about that...

I dunno. I think that Axel's characterization was pretty solid from the beginning. Yes, I think that Roxas perhaps softened his "heart"-or at the very least made him realize how much he really wanted one/missed his, but Axel was always friends with Roxas on a basic level. I actually don't think that Axel is a "bad guy"; he's odd, but he's not sadistic. I remember reading somewhere that "distasteful cruelty isn't [his] style" in one of the manga. He's hardened in a sense on the outside, but on the inside I really don't think he's actually "evil". In fact, I don't even think that Xemnas is evil. They are just lacking in understanding, nobodies seeking to be whole, to be somebodies.

And so it's come down to morality again...
based on Axel's actions and motivations of those actions, is he "evil"?

And is there truly a difference between his character in CoM and KH II as determined by this?

Well COM was written by someone else. KH2 was written by another guy. But the man that wrote the scenario for RE:COM wrote the scenarios for 358/2 days and BBS.

All villains are dark in every game.

    ...Axel isn't a villain... (I'm in denial. I don't want to call him a villain :) )

Yeah, the whole game development by different people might explain a piece of it. Thanks for everyone's contributions! Any other ideas? (Not that these weren't good.)

ha ha unfortunately no matter how pretty the man's eyes are waterfall he is a villan anyway except in like his last few minutes. But to explain why he is more 'dark' in COM is this: Would you be alll happy and cheery if you had a secret like Axel's? For real he's about to turn on the org with larx and the others nad all that jazz so of course he isnt going to be as 'bright' as he is in the second game. Besides this theres also the point that Dark axel was made first seeing as CoM was so technically dark axel is the original. But their personalities arent that different other than that. In the second game Sora KNOWS axel more and vise versa because Sora and Roxas kinda know about eachother more and have eachother's memories so it could be that seeing as the game is from Roxas's prospective a little more in KH-2 that you see this more fun side of Axel.

Actually, I would say that Axel is neutral. Not evil & not good.

i agree with that. most of the time axel is fighting more evil than good, and the only evil part about him is the part where he can be very deceptive. he is more neutral than good or evil

I'm just bugged that his voice sounds off in Re:CoM even though he's voiced by the same guy in KHII. Real bummer. Also, he does act a bit...different...it's funny at times XD

I noticed his voice was a bit off too. But I thought the same thing with King Mickey.
