Talking about booze here. What up?

How old were you when you had your first drink? Or maybe you haven't, yet. Maybe you disagree with it on principle. If you do drink, what do you like or don't like? Do you think you drink too much, or know someone who does? Ever done anything really idiotic, or something that you regret while intoxicated? Do you agree/disagree with the legal age to drink in your area? I don't know, go with it where ever you want; I'm just tossing out some ideas. Just talk about drinking. ^_^

    ____

To start off, I can recall having a sip here and there of one of my mom's drinks when I was a teenager, but I was a totally lame geek, and never went out anywhere with anyone underage drinking, so except for those sips, I was over 21 before I started drinking. I don't really do a lot of it even now, partly because I have a fear of doing something really stupid, and partly because I've yet to find anything I like the taste of enough to drink until wasted. I'll drink a little wine on special occasions and something like a hard lemonade or cider if I'm out, but that's mostly it. So no, I've never done anything while drunk that I regret, because I've never really been that drunk.

I guess I'll ramble on some more about other areas of interest concerning alcohol in another post. All you out there lurking feel free to add to or discuss whatever you want in here.

    3. That's right. I had my first beer when I was 3. For whatever reason I wanted some when my dad was drinking and he let me have some of his. To which then I supposedly tried chugging the whole bottle.

After that time in my life, there were various times of me having a sip of alcohol here or there while I was a minor. Never got drunk until I turned 21 though. And I've only been drunk twice.

First time was a few weeks after my 21st birthday. My dad took me to Vegas and we just gambled at one of the hotel bars while drinking whatever. I don't know how drunk I was since I still remember what happened. Everything was so funny. There was something enjoyable about walking drunk as well. And honestly, lying down on the floor felt more comfortable than it should have been.

As for the second time, it was at my dad's house. Some sort of party or something. Again, not drunk enough to forget anything.

Now, I don't know if it is just me or if I simply wasn't drunk enough each time, but I could still think clearly while drunk.

I had some extremely hands on parents growing up. That plus having known some people that weren't very nice when they were drunk gave me some reservations against drinking when I was underage. I was around drinking and I didn't have a problem with other people doing it, I just preferred to be the designated driver when I was underage.

My first time was when I was 22. I had no idea what I was doing and had way more than I should have and was with people I probably shouldn't have trusted. It wasn't a very good experience. And if it weren't for some very good friends, things could probably have gone very badly.

Second was a much better experience for everyone involved. I went to a karaoke bar with my older sister and some other friends and it was fun. Probably more the karaoke and the company than the drinking though. xD For the most part, I don't have a problem with a drink or two socially but I won't be making a habit of it personally.

The first time I ever had a drink was probably Christmas morning when I was 18. It wasn't anything too heavy though; just the annual Christmas morning Mimosas that my mother would make. By that time, my brother was 21, so she made one for him as well, and figured letting me have one wouldn't be terribly damaging. But I never made drinking a habit when I was underaged. Just the few sips and rare full drinks when my parents would allow it.

Once I turned 21 though, it became a more regular thing for me. I've never been drunk yet though, since I'm usually a one and done kind of guy (either because I only have time for one, or I get bored of hanging out wherever I am before I get a second. I think the closest I've ever been to drunk were the two New Years Eves I spent with my cousins. Since they would get a good collection of alcohol for the night, I usually drank heavier those nights; heavy enough that I felt it the day after at least.

I think it's interesting that thus far in this thread, we all have similar first experiences with alcohol. And that none of us are real big drinkers.

Trying to stir up some talk again, so I'll answer this question from my first post. I actually do not agree with the legal drinking age of 21. I feel like it makes alcohol taboo, and just encourages those underage to drink more. If you're considered mature enough to vote and serve in the military at age 18, you should be considered old enough to down a beer. Anyone agree, disagree?

I think that if history has shown us anything, it's that restricting substances only leads to more chaos surrounding them. Prohibition anyone? The restriction is pretty useless as it is, seeing as people younger than 18 can get their hands on alcohol without much trouble.

It's also good to keep in mind that 21 as the legal drinking age is a leftover from the days (in the US) when 21 was considered legal in all regards of adulthood, before 18 took on that distinction. The drinking age just never caught up with that.

Prohibition has worked in other parts of the world. My understanding is that it's due to an existence or lack of an 'entitlement factor.' We're seeing it everywhere these days, particularly in the Western world.

People are brought up having access to commodity X (or behaviour X). Given it feels 'normal' and above all, socially acceptable, everyone is in an uproar when anyone tries to infringe on their 'rights.' It happens time and time again. Opium, for instance, has largely fallen out of use (albeit it was eventually replaced, in the Western World, by other drugs).

If we hypothetically introduced a new form of say, drug that became exceptionally popular, but was dangerous, and then banned it quickly after its inception, people would bounce back without too much hassle...given enough exposure however people would riot and feel that "The Man" is always stepping on them and trying to take away their rights. Problems arise when, even illegally, a substance is used for an extended period of time, and then dangers are discovered (as is the typical historical pattern). Marijuana for instance, long thought to be a 'safe' drug, is now starting to show signs of damage and risk, particular in long term studies. Ironically, this information comes just as it became legalized in some places, and they're having a real tough time controlling the situation.

I guess the respective governments feel that they may as well make tax on it?

Another non-drug example would be something like abortion (not to veer too far off topic here). If you go back to the 1960s, people were advocating for abortion and most people are saying "No way, it's not right, etc." because it was a new, previously unknown, experience for them. They were raised in a culture where abortion was condemned. Some countries (such as Canada) successfully banned abortion for a time period. It was legalized once more in the 1980s. Now however, since the legalization, people have slowly and steadily become more adapted to the concept... and if anyone ever brings it up, people just kind of say "OBVIOUSLY we should have abortion. It's our right."

In answering your question, I've never really been a heavy drinker...it's tough for me to find anything that I actually enjoy. I didn't really start drinking at all until I was 24 and in grad school (it was a social activity by that point).
