The closer you get to the light the greater your shadow becomes

The closer you get to the light, the greater your shadow becomes. Is a very noteworthy quote from Kingdom Hearts. It is told to Sora by a mysterious voice in Kingdom Hearts 1. After the voice has stated, The day you will open the door is both far off and very near. It would seem the meaning of the quote is that throughout Sora's journey his own light will grow, and therefore he'll grow, but at the same time his opposition, the darkness will equally follow suit. Basically, a quote about good and evil with both literal and metaphorical meanings.

I like to think that this quote will hold true throughout the Kingdom Hearts series!

I would take it that this quote would encompass not only external Darkness from Sora's enemies, but also his own potential for Darkness as well?

You think so? I haven't really seen an emphasis on Sora's own darkness in Kingdom Hearts.

I've always thought that the time, however brief, that Sora had spent as a Heartless, should have, and could have, seen a more persistent backlash with relevance to the KH story, that's all. Like, it's been mentioned that the Anti-Form from KHII was, in-universe, the result of Sora's having turned into a Shadow Heartless; I just feel that something like that could be made into a bigger plot point somewhere along the way.

Dream drop disntance from what i heard was supposed to have a scene where xehanort wins by making Sora the new 13th member but in order to give it a more satisfying ending to the player, axel, donald, and goofy appeared to interrupt him. Axel even makes a comment about having a plan but forgetting the sequel, supposibly referencing the story change last minute.
No idea how true it is, but I remember hearing it somewhere.

I like to think that this quote is in a way (not entirely) representing sora and kairi. the closer you get to the light, the bigger your shadow. well sora had kairis heart in him from the start but once he got close to her body he ended up willingly sacrificing himself and falling into darkness.

so kairi being a being of pure light cast a shadow if you will as he got closer to her ultimately leading to his becoming a heartless
it also has to do with the dualistic nature of the annuel year and the sky as it crosses the sky

    • When the Sun is high in the sky (late spring, summer, early fall, noontime) the shadows are short
    • When the Sun is at an intermediate height in the sky (spring, fall, early or late in the day) the shadows are of intermediate length
    • When the Sun is low in the sky (late fall, winter, early spring, or very early or very late in the day) the shadows are the longest

and the closer the sun gets to earth the bigger the shadows until ultimately it too makes its descent into darkness.

this quote is talking about kairi. the closer you get to the light the bigger your shadow.

when sora finally found kairi in hollow bastion and had to free her heart, which is a heart of pure light, he fell into the darkness and became a heartless. the quote is referring to the sacrifice he made for kairi. that's what i think anyway.

I always took the quote to mean as a whole. Light & darkness dont exist without the other to define each other. You can't really destroy them and trying to empower one has a backlash to the other.

The OP is right and you can see it in context of the story itself. As Xehanort's darkness grows a light grew too since Xehanort's own schemes caused Sora to appear who wasn't a part of anyone's plans or even chosen to have a keyblade properly.

He just sorta came about and now contrasts Xehanort.
