      The love part is sort of right.

      His emotions are the trigger. Depending on how much of a certain emotion is built up within him is how his transformed acts. In this case, his feelings for Arabelle were passed on to his transformed state.

      He felt anger and rage towards his "parents" when he transformed before, causing those feelings to be passed on when he transformed, leading to him brutally murdering them in cold blood.
