So, the story is, I got a Best Buy gift card from my dad for Christmas, finally remembered I had it, and went a few weekends ago to blow it all on stuff. I had twenty bucks left, wanted to spend it all (the closest BB to my house is still a good distance away), saw a copy of God of War II, and randomly bought it.

What my long rambling is getting at is that, like a dumbass, I actually didn't notice it was the sequel until after I got home (though I still would have bought it since it was basically the only PS2 game the store had). And my question is, is it crucial to play through the first game before playing the second? If I have a general idea of the story of the first, will I be able to enjoy II, or should I really just go get the first one?

Also, how completely disgusting are these games? I'm embarrassingly squeamish, and I almost didn't pick the game up, despite my love of most things Greek mythology. I'm still gonna play it, but I'd like to be prepared.

And lastly, just any general, non spoiler comments anyone has about the series would be welcome. Do ya like 'em? Why or why not? And so on. ^_^

    Kratos is just one badass.
Playing the first one isn't too crucial, you can pick up the story from any one. I started from 2 and figured what was going on, then finally found a copy of 1and confirmed what I thought was going on then finished it all with 3. It's not a complex story, just a simple revenge and why is he doing it thing.

It's a pretty violent game, lots of dismembering of skeleton/zombie warriors, some disembowelling of centaurs and impaling of leviathans etc etc. And of course there is the "secret" which gives you extra red orbs (it's like the games monies) which is rather embarrassing (or funny) if someone were to walk in while you're playing (like FFX-2's massage mini game but perhaps worse).

And to sum it all up, it's one of my favourite games. Simple Revenge story, but it's rather epic. Great game play, solve puzzles, kill enemies to upgrade and receive new abilities and weapons, reaction commands that involve the majority if the buttons, find hidden treasures to level up and dodge roll plus more. Great challenge, took me a while to finish, even on the normal difficult because I kept dying =[ so thank you unlimited lives =P

This is good to know. I've heard from pretty much everywhere that these games are epic, but at the same time, if for some reason I totally hate 'em, I don't want to be out the cost of both games. So I think I'll do like you, play II, get I if I want to continue on in the series, and then someday, when I finally get a PS3, get the third.

I don't believe there is much on this earth more embarrassing than the X-2 massage minigame. If I can sit through that more than once, I think I can sit through just about anything. XD

    GrandShadow I accept your challange.

well like he said, it's not nessecary to play GoW 1. recommended, but not needed.

and the secret that you mentioned, is Kratos gets laid. do it once for lots of orbs, extra times for like 5 orbs a time. If you have patience you can max out your starting weapon on level 1.

a couple tips: 1= stick with only the starting weapon. the others you get, suck. sadly the final fight forces you to use a different weapon temporarily, but otherwise avoid the extra weapons.

2=power up your projectile spell, it comes in very handy both as a spell and a combo helper. higher combos yeild better orbs dropped so keeping that combo meter up is crucial

3=learn the dodge roll, master the dodge roll. that move is a life saver and is done by a simple flick of the right stick.

4=search everything and destroy everything. thats how you find secrets and get more stuff. the game has plenty of Zelda-esque puzzles and sometimes destroying it is the answer.

I stand by what I said before- there are few things more embarrassing than FF X-2. I don't reckon this'll be much of a problem.

And thanks for the advice. I'll keep it in mind when I start playing.
