KHP's Artist of the Week

Hello KHP! As you all know, I'm Mike Hunt, and yeah I'm fairly obsessed with music. So, with Hope's OK, I am taking the liberty of starting something new on KHP to try to boost activity; Artist of the Week.

What is the good of this, you ask? Well, basically I just wish to impose some bands upon you weekly, try to find new music for everyone here to enjoy, and just to have fun really. The artist of the week won't always be unknown either. It could be something you just heard on the radio this morning, or something you heard in a movie but didn't know what it was. It won't always be the same genre either. One week I could make it indie, the next post-hardcore, the next electronica. I want to keep things well rounded. And if any of you have suggestions for an artist of the week, feel free to add me on MSN and we can talk about it.

    ALSO; FEEDBACK IS ENCOURAGED!

    Week 1: Free Energy
    Week 2: She & Him
    Week 3: Freelance Whales
    Week 4: Yeasayer
    Week 5: Manchester Orchestra
    Week 6: Against Me!
    Week 7: Paper Tongues
    Week 8: Massive Attack
    Week 9: Local Natives
Week 10: Two Door Cinema Club
    Week 11: The Used
    Week 12: LCD Soundsystem

    Free Energy

Free Energy is an indie alternative pop band from Philadelphia, PA.Their debut album, "Stuck on Nothing", came out earlier this year, fronted by the songs "Free Energy" "Bang Pop" and "Dream City". The album brings out very positive vibes, and is great to listen to during the summer coming up.

I just added Free Energy to my Last.Fm and Playlist. They are pretty epic. :)

What next week? My absolute favorite right now is Tokyo Hotel and that might just be bacause they've been playing over and over all day on my labtop and now Ready Set Go is stuck in my head though. Anyone else have suggestions?

Tokio Hotel? They're the band with that song in the Android commercial, correct? I'll look into them more because I never really listened to them much, and will definitely add them to the list of possibilities.

And in case anyone is wondering how I am doing this, I arbitrarily created a list of different bands I'm aware of, but most others seem to overlook. Then I choose one at random. Unless in the event of a huge breakthrough debut album, Free Energy will almost definitely be the only artist I pick out of choice and not at random

So I wonder what artist is going to be for next week, I'm curious.

Sorry it's late, my brother's been in the hospital the past few days and I have been more stressed than I should be finals week.

    She & Him

Many of you might be familiar with actress Zooey Deschanel (500 Days of Summer, Elf). But many people are not well aware of her pursuit of a music career with her indie folk band She & Him. S&H is a collaboration consisting of Deschanel (keyboard and vocals) and M. Ward (guitar) most known for their songs "Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?" and "In The Sun". They have 2 albums; Volume One, which was released in March of 2008, and Volume Two, which was released just over two months ago (March 23, 2010)

He is We is a pretty good one. I've only heard a few songs so far but they sound pretty good.

Again yeah, real life took precedence over KHP for a few days. I was in Virginia.

    Freelance Whales

Freelances Whales formed in late 2008 in NYC.They are an indie folk band who just use whatever instruments they feel sound good, such as a glockenspiel or harmonium. Their songs are melodically powerful, as they kind of just make you feel like you're dreaming. They have one album out, Weathervanes.

I only listened to the song you posted via the YouTube link, and one other I clicked on after that, but based on those two, I think this was a good choice. The songs just give a happy feeling.

And this, too. Dreamlike is a good descriptor, based on the songs I've heard so far, anyway.

Yeah. The reason why I added Freelance Whales to the list is the emotion I feel whenever I listen to them. It just makes everything feel at ease with the way the instruments all intermingle with one another.

Yeah I hand picked this week's, but only because since I started to listen to them I've been addicted.

    Yeasayer

Yeasayer is a psychedelic indie folk band from Brooklyn. They have two full length albums out; All Hour Cymbals (2007) and Odd Blood (February 8, 2010). Odd Blood is a lot more psychedelic than All Hour Cymbals was (AHC has more of a tribal vibe to it if you ask me), which makes sense as the band said that the whole concept of the album was made whilst acid tripping in New Zealand. But regardless of that, they are an incredible band, worthy of the KHP Artist of the Week title for this fourth week.

Shiiiii- When you said psychedelic, I was hoping something like Shpongle. Yeasayer has amused me, only because it reminded me of Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job. Not entirely my liking, didn't enjoy them too much. Not so much into this genre.

btw, I do enjoy being introduced to new bands and artists. Keep up the good work.

I agree with Libertine about Yeasayer. They just aren't really my thing either, I guess.

On the other hand, I did like Manchester Orchestra.

His voice may have been a little rough, but I liked it anyway. And really, you don't have to be great at singing to be popular. A lot of "talented" artists are really terrible when you hear them live.

I second this. I don't always think to post in here, but I like hearing what you choose to showcase. So, thanks. ^_^

Thanks for the criticism, Toph and Libertine. I kind of figured Yeasayer wouldn't be the biggest hit here, but I figured I'd give some more psychedelic shit a try. Basically, until I get a much better idea of what everyone listens to now, I can't always give the greatest recommendations for the forums as a whole. But, the more people post their thoughts on different artists, the more I can give you guys what you want.

Go back one or two pages in this thread and try finding something from the list. Might help you with a better idea of what the forums as a whole would rather enjoy.

Manchester Orchestra, Going more to my liking. Especially enjoying the instruments, but unfortunately the vocals are some what lacking for me. Not entirely sure why, I just didn't find it matching the instruments as well, still alright though and I don't mind it a lot.

^ Thanks for sharing. I listened to a couple of their videos on YouTube, and I enjoyed them. I'll be looking for more of their stuff.

Hope you enjoy the concert. XD

I know those two bands that were recently mentioned here. Never really got much into them. Not too sure, just never got into their style of music. Against Me sounds as if they are trying to be like another band but aren't doing a great job at it. Paper Tongues was just meh to me.
