Hello, I am an undergraduate Biology major and plan on going to medical school after I complete my Bachelor's. As many of you can understand studying is a little difficult sometimes. Not all approaches promise good results and retention of the material. I imagine that there are quite a few of you here who are also students as well and was wondering: What are some of the study habits that work best for you? I am interested to hear anything that might be able to help :)

Well I am a student currently, even though I skipped a grade. But on the contrary, be more "specific" when you imply or implicate the word "study habits".

    Here are some studying habits

Here's my study habit: Don't Study. I never study for anything. I make sure I listen in class. That's why I got nearly straight A's for my 1st semester. My only other grade was a C in Biology.

This is one of the most idiotic response I have ever seen. Actually no, it's not, it's like a regular doing here.

Which is why you should study.

Of course, the worst of the bad habits of studying is not studying at all. Some people plan to go through school without cracking open a book. It is rare for this to be an adequate response to academia. Most people need to study, unlike ADogX who relied on only luck to pass instead of actually studying and using his brain in his spare time.

I don't know if I really have a studying "habit" since I don't do it on a regualar basis, some classes I feel would be pointless to study for, like Physics for example, either you know it or you don't, cramming your brain with knowledge it just doesn't want to receive is useless in my eyes. But when I do study, I make sure its the night before an exam, NO not because I'm lazy or procrastinating but because if I study the night before then I know the information will be fresh in my mind come tomorrow morning; I'm more likely to remember something I read yesterday as opposed to 5 or 6 days ago.

Thanks for the info, Demaian. That was very helpful. In fact, I am actually taking a short break from studying for my Chemistry exam tomorrow. I have exams in both the lecture and the lab. I make sure that I pay attention and attend all of the lectures during the quarter to make sure that I understand what the material is about in the eyes of my professors. They went through their schooling to make sure that they had the best understanding of the material so that they could teach it so I see no point in skipping and going through the material on your own.

The only class that I have ever studied less than a few hours for was Psychology which I will finish this quarter with a B or higher. I have been studying all of the material for my Anatomy class and Biology class for a few weeks now. I have to take a comprehensive in my Anatomy course since I missed the second exam due to a corneal ulcer. Unfortunately this means that I will have to study for the material in the past three chapters (Respiration, Urinary and Digestion systems) which are all very Physiology heavy. Thanks for the recommendations thus far. I would love to hear more if anyone else has any more input.

As Murhphy's Law states, "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong." So it's important to prepare for the worst.
But assuming that there won't be any natural disasters happening anytime soon where you live, I suggest these for the mundane difficulties:

If you feel sleepy from 5 minutes of studying, sleep. You can't remember much when you're tired.BUT! Set an alarm for 10 minutes. It's amazing how fast you can rejuvenate through a small snooze. And it's hard to go back to sleep again, too. Not recommended for nighttime. In that case, just sleep. Don't pull off an all-nighter unless you absolutely have to (i.e. projects, written assignment, stuff like that)

If you can't understand what you're reading, read it over again and again. Get that information about chromosones or whatever burned into your skull.

When you start to reject studying, take a break. Studying in a bad mood doesn't help. If you can, though, just sit back and relax. Then study again. If you're grounded, then that's all that you can do, anyway.

When you have nothing to do and you don't have your textbook, think about what you've learned. You might've forgotten something important. Make a note of it and read it when you have the chance.

If you feel like the content you're studying is too boring (going back to making you sleepy or not understanding), find an alternative source of information. Maybe some funny science videos or catchy songs that help you remember stuff. PM me or others who offer for examples.

Ask for help. If you've got friends who understand the subject, ask them. Or a tudor, if you don't know anybody at your school.

And finally, listen in class. As ADogX123 has stated, listening helps. Just don't NOT study.

    Hope this helps. :D
