Super Smash Brothers: Brawl

After about three years of that first video featuring a nuclear fart from Wario (which you can't actually do, sadly) Super Smash Bros. Brawl has finally hit state-side after three delays. And over all, it's a bit of a let down. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love the game. It just wasn't what I was expecting.

    Story Mode

The Subspace Emissary, Brawl's 'adventure' mode (which strangely feels more like filler for you to do when nobody on your buddy list is online) is very lacking featuring no dialouge and little to none backstory. It's fun for say the first thirty minutes then it starts to get old and repetitive, with only about three five cut scenes that provide any actual explanation (most are just there to introduce a character, such as seeing Snake's Box for about five seconds only to revert back to another less-awesome character). The only part I didn't see coming is when Master Hand turned out to be the good guy after seven years of thinking the glove was out to kill you.

The saddest part was that it was short, and many characters could have talked, but instead Nintendo choose them to communicate through grunts and nods, which leads you to wonder if Otacon gave Snake some device that allowed him to read minds.

The only real advantage to this is quickly unlocking characters and getting trophies.

    Grade: C-

    Controls

The game has fairly nice controls, but the Wii-mote/Nunchuck combination feels awkward. I would recommend digging your Gamecube out of the basement and stealing one of your controllers from it. While sometimes it does feel like the game is ignoring you pressing the A-Button (Which you do use much more than the B-Button in this game, unlike Melee, which is a welcome change) and it will sometimes not register you dodging one of those pesky smash attacks, overall they keep it nice and the game works with very few glitches.

    Grade: B+

    Items/Trophies/Stickers/Other stuff

Most of the items are the same things we've had since since the early days of Smash, which means Capsules, Pokeballs, and Beam Swords, but we see some new -- and very welcome -- additions.

However, one addition is completely and totally unfair. However, it's not useless, but the opposite of useless. This item is the Smash Ball. Certain characters such as Meta Knight have Final Smashes that will kill nearly anybody on screen. Then we see Final Smashes such as Wario's, where he turns into Super Wario. The only advantage of this is about an extra 5% damage per hit and invincibility. It's pretty much just a powered up power star. This item is unfair, and extremely annoying if your best character happens to be one such as Wario.

Dragoon is probably one of my favorite items, as this item has a higher kill rate than most final smashes. You get it by picking up it's three pieces from the ground (if another character picks one up, you can make him drop it by combo-attacking him) and once those three items are obtained, the screen gets shaded red, and there's a crosshair in the center. Once a character gets inside that crosshair, hit the A-Button as fast as you can, in the hopes of hititng said character.

All the other in-battle items aren't really worth mentioning (Usually the Assist Trophies don't assist, as they should be called Hinder Trophies). The trophies are the same as melee, and the stickers are the same as the trophies. You can find them on the ground in Subspace. You can play a mini-game to get them. You can get them by beating classic mode. You can get them by just leaving your game on. You can get them an nearly anyway.

Overall, the new items are a welcome addition.

    Grade: A-

    Multiplayer

This is where Brawl truly shines. Just as any other Smash Brothers game, you get to see some of gaming's greatest characters come together and beat the blue bloody hell out of each other. While it is unfortunate that Pit and some other character's move-set feel like they were made for the Emissary and not for the Brawl matches, making them suck, the game retains its fun. It's excellent for parties, and you can now go online.

The online, however, is very laggy. Though it has been getting better, once they get the 'against anyone' up, who knows what will happen. It does seem though that the more you play with one person, the less lag you get. So maybe Nintendo will find a way to fix this problem. But keep in mind, it's Smash Brothers. Online. Seriously. Isn't that awesome enough?

    Grade: A

    Characters

Do you have to ask? No, seriously, do you? This is possibly the greatest roster put into one game in the history of the world. Though it feels like King Dedede and R.O.B. were put in as filler, we couldn't have asked for a better list.

    Grade: A+

    Classic

The Classic Mode is the same as always. Pick a character and go through a few stages. Though they unfortunately took out Race to the Finish and didn't bring back Board the Platforms as I was hoping, we now have 12 stages, and two Target Tests per Classic Run (However, these aren't customized for each character. We get about five very generic stages with targets put in them. Nintendo being lazy again, anyone?) and we get the first 4 vs 4 free-for-all in Classic

They did some good and some bad in the new version of the Classic Mode.

    Grade: B+

    Soundtrack

This game takes some of the greatest melodies and jingles in gaming history and gives some of them a welcome remix. The slowed down, more electronic version of Luigi's Mansion and the Ocarina of Time Medley are two of this games highlights as they showcase this games musical diversity. Boasting 50+ songs ranging from musical genres of orchestrial to speed metal, we really couldn't have asked for more.

    Grade: A+

    Stadium

Now featuring a Boss Battle mode (Which can be very challenging, as Tabuu and Meta Ridley are very annoying) a somewhat upgraded Home-Run Contest, an upgraded Multi-Man Melee (now called Multi-Man Brawl. Isn't that so original!), and a watered down Target Smash, this mode is excellent for wasting time.

It can give you bragging rights as well, if you manage to defeat ten of the creatures in Cruel Brawl, or work your way through 150 in endless Brawl, or survive the 15-minutes brawl, beat the Boss Battle Mode without using any heart containers, and giving that Sandbag a good hard 2000 meter whack in Home-Run Contest, this mode is made probably as good as it could be, with the exception of the now generalized Target Smash (Which they botched entirely, as you there isn't a custom made level for each character).

    Grade: A-

    Overall

The letdown of the Subspace Emissary is excused with excellent multiplayer, the somewhat laggy online, one of the greatest soundtracks in gaming history and the still solid Classic mode. Both general gaming and Smash Brothers fans alike really shouldn't be asking for more.

    Overall Grade: A

I would say overral a C. Why? Because first of all the online play sucks. I have a wired connection and it lags. Graphics are good so i would give a A. Orchestra was tremendous.

Characters they SUCK!! especially all the ones that came out from meele. The only ones that I like and they have good fighting moves and stuff like that is MetaKight and ROB.

Metaknigt its fast and he can make a spike move. ROB is great for medium high attacks. Not that fast as Metaknight but they are in the lead.

Also the Characters are slow. My fav and best character of meele is fox. Brawl maked fox slower. Witch is really bad because i can't make most of my moves quick. Like, making this famous move or video called Shine Blind YouTube - SSBM Shined Blind. This guy uses fox counter attack as his death weopon. Everytime u use the counter attack in meele, ur opponent has a "nock out". More like when u use ur sheild all up and then it has like explosion or chemical reaction, what ever u want to call it.

For me, Meele is better and more competitive than Brawl. So ya, that's my opinion.

Brawl is fail. All the characters got nurfed. For those who don't what that means, they got made really crappy, and really floaty. That game is no good for competition and it is really slow. The stages are great, especially the custom stage. Still that can't make up for the let down nintendo has given us. It should never have come out. Music does kick though. Thats all i have to say.

    Graphics: 4/5 Gameplay:2/5 Music: 5/5

No, the characters ALL sucked. Thats the problem with that game. Why did they take away wave dashing? Its what made Melle Melle.

Wow that was the most fail of a statement i've heard since people started whining about the light characters. wow good job of taking advantage of a games glitches to play competitively, o please give me a break.

Wave dashing did not make melee what it was. melee was another smash based game like its predecessor Super smash brothers 64. That's jut a glitch they found to speed up/ remove frame rates. what made melee was the intense character roster the multi-player platforming and the competitive aspect of there overall game. the fact that you honestly belive that tells me alot......and alot that i don't like.

I'm also guessing you have not been to any brawl tournements with the way you stated that. besides Melee is slowing starting to die out anyway, dispite the pro's Ken, Neo and so forth.

Using wave dashing made that game even harder. Do you know how hard it is to pull off a wave dash and make it useful? Really hard. And a lot of the characters in melee were stacked. The tiers rarely ever lie, and anyone with the balls to play a mew two against a puff can expect a hard time of it. Not mention Marth and them. While acceptions exist, the game could have been more fair.

Still, brawl is the one thing my friends and I have been dreading. That game is possibly the worst addition possible to the SSB series. Its a real shame that melee's dieing, because i happen to love that game, but its a tragedy that people are killing melee for brawl. You can't honestly think that the floatyness and the fact that every character got all the good aspects taken away is a good thing can you? That tells ME alot about you, and a lot that I don't like.

    *Edit*
I went and watched some tourney vids. I was not impressed. The combo's and things were fine, but seeing mario's down b used as for a recovery so well, it made me sad. And seeing deaths happen at 150% and above, now that made me want to cry. Do we need a fighting game that takes 3 minutes to make 1 kill? I sure as hell don't. Melle games took less than 4 minutes for a 4 stock match at its fastest. Brawl took about 3 minutes to make 1 kill at its fastest from what i saw, save for the cheap mario 6% kill which made me wince.

XD I see that Zerieth is having a rebellion against the family all round world game that makes everyone jump up & down. Seriously though, I don't think that Melee is dieng (In my opinion) I love the game too, but the reason why everyone loves SMSB is because of the new characters, the feel of the game like Melee, the way it makes your heart race, the way they unleash the characters true power, (I'm thinking of making a Super Mario Smash War when I get into the gaming company. I'll make sure that it suits to your taste somehow Zer), the new stages, the new options in the game, the storyline, & a whole lot more. Yet, you still hate it...

I hate it because its not as competitive, super slow and floaty, and the cheap final smashes that the pro's actually turned off. I don't care about the story line cause its first and foremost a competitive fighting game. Still, no cool techniques anymore, though i'm sure someone is searching for some glitches. By the way, meta knight can make an auto up kill. If you use your recovery when your opponent is off the ground and you're next to them, it kills.

Try me, i'd like to hear what you have to say. Pm me if you like, but I'll always think this game is crap. My friends were dissapointed to, and played frisbee with the disk. Lol, better than the ol microwave i guess, he did that with his WOW free trial.

i like SSB, but SS64 and SSM was much better, more destructive and more harder computers. plus the charters where just how they where in the games.
