On another forum, I recently stumbled upon a most unexpected thread, concerning a particular musical endeavor that I have long been engaged in. I have hence, decided to bring a bit of talk to it, if anyone here is into that sort of thing, to the forums here. If you are, or ever have been, a member or enthusiast of such ensembles as a marching bands, drum corps, or any indoor color guards.dance ensembles or drumline, or any other marching, musical ensemble not aforementioned, consider this the nexus through which you might all bond, and relate experiences...

Allow me to start off by saying that I have been through six summers filled with the fun of drum & bugle corps, having walked away from one of these summers with a gold medal, and two others having been to world championships finals.

I have done three years of High School marching band, would have been four if i didnt move, and one year of college marching band.i would be with the South Alabama Jags tis year, but Im not going to college this year.Money and stuff.

High School, first year was ok,we were not the best where we were, but we also still did good.Alot of us were new and the school had just recently been split with a new high school due to overcrowding. We were in BOA,but I dont remember placement.

I moved the next year and didnt do marching band, but I did do them for the other two.The first year we pretty much constiently did great, with only one show doing under third place (7th),but it was awesome since we got to do the finals of that one.it was in South Dakota, though we are a Minnesota marching band.

The second year wasnt as good, new director. He was cool, but it was his first time teaching period. We did BOA that year in St. Louis, again dont remember placement. Not finals though.

University of South Alabama just got their football program last year, along with the marching band,so it was our first year.I loved it,did some awesome songs and the team kicked ass.Hard.Seems to be doing the same this year!Wish I was down there this year.

Personally, I had never really been much for marching band, even though I had always wished by high school could have had one. We were a small school, with no football program, and therefore, no incentive to really have anything other than a concert band, which pretty much started to fall through while I was there. I'd have to say, the first college marching band that had caught my eye was UMass Amherst, particularly their drumline. Seeing as I was/am a percussionist I had tried for it, and didn't get in. In the end I ended up leaving Mass, and my thoughts of being in their band behind. As far as I'm concerned, their drum line is really the only incentive for me to have even been at UMass in the first place, and when it comes down to it, there are so many other incredible percussion programs out there, even if they don't have a drum line.

But still, the UMass line is one of the best in the country, quite possibly the world.
