*Beep* *Beep* *Beep* *Beep*

"Ugghh" Arabelle sighed as she woke up from her slumber before whacking the alarm clock. She wasn't much of a morning person (maybe because she's always too busy staying up late for pointless reasons), but that never changed the opinion of her alarm clock on when she had to wake up. Arabelle struggled out of bed a little dazed, but she slowly started getting into the rhythm as she always had.

Today wasn't an ordinary day, it's not even much of a stretch to say that it's an extraordinary one. On this very day, the brand new "Galileo Version 4.0 Graphing Calculator" was coming out. For the math nerd society, this was a revolution. This was the day where you separated the Star Wars fanatics from the ultimate geeks. This was the day that Arabelle had been waiting for.

She wasn't much of a stereotypical nerd. She didn't have the combination of glasses, braces, pocket protectors, suspenders, and the combed back hair; Arabelle was just a little timid and sought comfort through the multiple equations of math. She wasn't one of those "die hard" math people, she just did math whenever she was bored, which so happens to be most of the time. An introvert some might say, but she preferred the term "shy".

Once she was finished getting dressed she made her way downstairs to grab a bite to eat before heading out to town. One of the worse feelings ever was making it back to the store just to realize that you're starving. Arabelle quietly ate her breakfast (was nobody home (?) ) and moseyed on outside. It looked like it was going to be one hot day, she should have applied her sunscreen.

 

Arabelle checked her watch as she continued to walk down the sidewalk at a decent pace; It was days like this where she wished she could drive. The sun was beating down on her, it felt uncomfortably warm, and her hair was bound to frizz from the humidity. Uggh, this is just my luck....

Arabelle was only one more block away from Techno Planet (the beautifully wonderful store that would be selling this marvelous calculator), when she started to wonder if there would be a massive line-up. She didn't think that she was the only one who liked math to such an extant as to buy the most nerdy calculator of this decade, but she was hoping deep down that there wouldn't be many people there. Sometimes buying things in public was a little awkward, not to mention that she despised waiting in lines.

She was now maybe a foot away from the store; Arabelle peeked inside the glossy windows to see if there was a crowd, but was relieved when she discovered that only the usual amount of people were in there. With a big sigh of gratitude she opened the door just to catch her own reflection: Her hair must have expanded by 5 inches ! If Annie the orphan had teased her hair, it would have looked an awful lot like this. Humidity sucks.

 

"Oh Lord !" Arabelle jumped back, startled, since she hadn't noticed that somebody was behind her; She was clearly too busy admiring the new and beautiful calculator.

It took her a few moments to realize that she was staring face to face with Sho. He was a gorgeous guy. No scratch that off, he was a dream to her mathematical world. Sho was brilliantly smart, was absolutely stunning looking, had amazing hair that seemed to just bounce in the wind, and definitely knew how to use a calculator. He was a dream boat, to say the least, but far out of Arabelle's league. She was a nerdy, shy girl with little confidence, wasn't that attractive ?

It took Arabelle a few moments to snap out of her reverie and realize that she was just looking at him (how awkward is that ?) "Oh... Umm.. Sorry. I didn't catch what you were saying..." She averted her eyes down. "It's a nice calculator..."

 

At first Arabelle was wrapped up in the moment, but then she started to process what was going on. She was kissing Sho. All of a sudden her nerves went into over time: she turned bright red, pulled away, and was absolutely panic stricken. Things like this never happened to people like her, she simply didn't know how to react.

The only thing she knew how to do was run away; That's an easy natural instinct. Arabelle needed some time to think about what had just happened. "Umm.. I'm sorry Sho... I just... I have to go..."

In a matter of moments she was practically outside Techno Planet; Calculator unpurchased.

 

Arabelle decided that there was no real point in attending classes that day because she knew that she wouldn't be able to concentrate. Things had seemed so surreal with the events at Techno Planet, she needed some time to rest and think about it. Arabelle was convinced that she was just dreaming and that eventually she would wake up to the pitiful reality that belonged to her. Before she went home though, she decided that she had to drop by the school and pick up her Calculus textbook in her locker. She was well aware that she would be bored and needed something to do later on.

She made her way through the hallways as she always had until she finally got to her locker. Arabelle tried not to mutter her combination (it was a terrible habit really) as she turned the little wheel of the lock. She normally couldn't get it on her first try because she's usually in such a hurry to run to class, but today she felt a little more at ease. It's strange to say, but today was special, maybe because of Sho ?

Arabelle opened up her locker and grabbed her textbook, but before she closed it she noticed that there was a calculator with a note right next to it. Slightly curious she read what it said,

"Be my adjacent 45?-Sho "

Blushing a little, she realized that she couldn't possibly be dreaming. It had all seemed so unusual, but in a good way. Arabelle proceeded to close her locker, calculator and note in hand, and decided that she still might as well head home. Maybe things were going to be different. A nap can usually clear things up though.

 

"Hmm ?" Arabelle looked over to see none other than Sho. He seems to be popping up everywhere's these days... Arabelle was a little nervous and was always flustered with words when she was around good looking people like him, but she didn't want that to be apparent. Besides, he probably figured that she was super shy because of what had happened at the store earlier. Arabelle mustered up a bit of courage to calm herself down and said,

"Shouldn't you be in school ?"

 

Arabelle needed a few moments to take everything in. Sho loves me ?... What a curve ball to be thrown on such a random day.

"Umm... All right. I want to be home in an hour though."

Arabelle couldn't tell Sho if she loved him or not. It's hard to know these things when the rug was pulled out from under your feet. Granted, she has had a crush on him for years, but it's not like she considered it as a real possibility. Things like this didn't happen often to people like her.

 

Arabelle hesitated before getting out of the car. This didn't seem odd at all (?)... Why would he live in such a reclusive home ? She wasn't a big fan of horror movies, but this seemed to be the perfect setting for one. Since this was the case, Arabelle decided that she might as well stay close to Sho.

"Umm... It's a nice home you have here." she whispered. Perhaps she should have went to school today...

 

Arabelle was slightly in shock from her surroundings. What a strange house this was, it absolutely puzzled her mind. She hadn't seen anything quite like this and it's bizarre to think that she has liked Sho for so long, yet she didn't know where he lived or that his house was covered in equations ? There was no doubt in her mind that he loved math to infinity.

Arabelle walked inside the odd house not knowing what to expect. She was beginning to realize that things aren't always as they seem...

"So, do you live here alone ?" she asked in a polite manner.

 

Arabelle peeked around Sho's room while he was gone; It wasn't snooping when it was really only math things, was it ? She noticed that he seemed to have a regular rectangular shaped bed which was probably the only normal thing in his room. (Not that he had weird things in there or anything of that sort, there were just several calculators and mathematical formulas present that the average person wouldn't have in their room.) I bet he calculated the area of his bed before, she grinned at that thought.

Since there was nothing much left to observe, Arabelle decided to grab a calculator off of his desk and lay in his bed while playing with it. Math clearly had occupied her time for far too long and now she felt a little lost when she wasn't solving problems. She decided that she might as well invent a right-angle triangle and try to solve for the remaining sides using one angle and the hypotenuse. Maybe Sho would be back when she was done ?
