Were all the side installments really necessary?

    I have played kingdom hearts 1, 2 and chain of memories and I would of loved to have played 358/2 days but had no time nor money to play so I watched as the series went on releasing minor installments developing back story.

    Now that all the loose ends have been tied with all the prequels they are finally developing the third game 7 years after the release of the second game. Making those like myself who waited for the next installment that carried the story of the original heroes on either impatient for the release of the third.

    Now one of the biggest concerns I have about the third kingdom hearts game is that to understand a lick of what is going one has to of played the side installments and it is just a huge waste of time and money if that's the way to go.

    So I end with theses question: will Kingdom Hearts 3 story play like twos where the back story is optional or is it necessary to understand the plot? If so why was the back story made cross platforms? Is it worth it collecting the games and consoles? Or has square shot themselves in the foot on this one?

    Just get 1.5 and 2.5 HD remixes and you'll be caught up except for Dream Drop Distance. I finally caved and bought a 3Ds to play it (and Pokemon X). There's really no way to know how much side game recap they'll put in 3 until it comes out. Also Nomura said 3 was really announced too early and it may be 2015 before it's released so I would just embrace one of the spin offs or get 2.5(which includes birth by sleep) when it comes out next year.

    In other words:
    Chain of Memories (GBA) - worth it
    358/2 days (DS) - neat but not really necessary
    Re:coded (DS) - nope, about one sentence of backstory
    Birth By Sleep (PSP) - WORTH IT
    Dream Drop Distance (3DS) - strong connection to BBS and KH3 so worth it

    Birth By Sleep is definitely the best of the side games and probably the most necessary, but again it will be included in 2.5 HD Remix so there's that option if you have a PS3 and not a PSP.
