Well it helps to make sure Tidus has the Sphere Shot move equipped. That was how I managed to beat them in my first play through. The second time I played through the game I also had the Jecht Shot available for Tidus.

For Tidus to learn the Jecht Shot 2, first he needs to learn 3 certain techniques. Every person who can play blitzball has three key techniques they need to learn. The techniques are nothing special, but them learning the techniques allows them to learn more of them or something. I think that in addition to those three for Tidus, he also needs to know the original Jecht Shot. Once he learns all the techniques, the Jecht Shot 2 will eventually be given away as a league or tournament prize. And as for hours total, I suppose a lot. My original file I played a lot since I like playing it a bit.

Don't feel bad about it. I remember reading somewhere that if you don't get a cat fixed (Or if the cat doesn't have baby kittens) within a certain amount of time, her ovaries will crystalize or something.
