    Chapter Thirty-One: A Lucky Break

Kyle started pulling as the rope flashed white. "Not even two seconds!" he grunted as he pulled. A group of people came from out of the portal. No sooner had they when the rope flashed again and Kyle had to keep pulling.
    -------------------------------------
"Over here! I found some more!" Xenex quickly ran to his brother and tied some rope around the group of people. They were just standing, motionless with thier eyes closed and expressions blank. As Xenex finished he put a small bit of power into the rope and it flashed. They quickly ran on as the group was suddenly pulled by the rope. Novek quickly spoke, "We've gotta hurry. By this worlds time its been a day already meaning a minute in our world. We don't have much time and we've been finding them in groups, miles apart. We're just lucky Sofra or some of this worlds beasts haven't found us."
Xenex stayed silent as they ran. His brother was right, they were lucky. The world they were in was dark, the only light came from from an endless full moon. The enviorment was nothing but black stone and an eerie smoke was on the ground. They had to be careful because they had no idea how the creatures here looked. Or how strong they were. "I know but I did warn you not to come along."
"Yeah yeah, whatever. But seriously though, what if we don't find everyone in time? Or what if we die?"
"We won't die and we will find everyone! Now shut up and lets go!"
    -------------------------------------
Kyle yanked again as the rope flashed. He was sweating and needed a break but knew that wasn't possible. The people that came out of the portal would untie themselves and sit off to the side and help the new people as they came out. Finally one of the men walked over to him. "Need a break? I can take over for you human."
Kyle shook his head and pulled as the rope again flashed. "Not possible. This was enchanted so that they won't run out so long as I hold it. If I let go for even a moment then everything falls apart." The man nodded and went to help the others that had just come out. Though I wish I could take a break.
    -------------------------------------
"Okay, thats almost everyone." Xenex said as another group was pulled away.
    "How do you know?"
"Cause I killed them. I remember everyones face from that night. Mary's curse won't let me forget." Xenex looked down, a depressed look on his face.
"Oh, sorry." Novek looked around for a moment. "Where do you think the others are?"
"Well there's only one place we haven't checked here. Sofra's palace." The two took off running.
    -------------------------------------
Kyle was waiting. "No flash for a whole minute now." He looked over towards the group of people that were already brought back. "Hey! Is that everyone?"
A few looked around, some doing head counts and such. Finally a few yelled out no. Kyle looked to Mary. She was still glowing from the super power of the eclipse, but she was shaking from how much power she had to contiually give the seal to keep the portal open. "You think something happened to them?" Kyle yelled.
"I don't know!" she yelled back.
Suddenly there was a crack in the sky. Kyle looked up in time to see what looked like tge sky being shattered. Standing in mid-air was Byron and the others. "So this is where he was. Pretty strong barrier too." Byron's eyes opened in shock as he noticed all the people. His face showed a look if fury. "You're all supposed to be dead!" They charged down but before they could do anything some of the men in the group all fired off spells at them. They were quickly dodged as they passed harmlessly by. Before they could react a couple came up from there side and blasted them into the portal with a wind spell.
Kyle smiled for a moment. Serves them right.

Chapter Thirty-Two: A Palace Of Dreams

Xenex and Novek were hiding behind a large stone pillar. Behind them was the vast blank landscape of the world. In front of them however was a large palace made of pure black stone. In the pale lighting of the endless moon, the palace took on the appearance of an etheral mountain. "So that's Sofra's great home?"
"Do you see any other buildings around Novek?"
"I barely see that one in this light."
"Then yes, that's his palace. Now let's go. We've only got one day left by this world's time and we have twenty people to find." Both of them sprinted out of thier hiding spot, headed straight for the entrance. They stayed low, hoping to avoid drawing attention to themselves.

As they neared the palace they slowed and hid behind one of the statue's of Sofra. Novek was about to ask why when Xenex had to stop him from yelling out in shock. Flying around was an eyeball. It had black wings coming out the top and the eye itself was bloodshot to the extreme, the whites pure red. It flew past them as if on orders and Xenex waited a moment before releasing his hold over his brother. "Sofra's guards, so to speak. They do something when they notice a creature getting to close or a person that's not under his hypnosis. Whatever they do will draw Sofra over and he'll slay whatever raised the alarm. We'd best be careful and stay out of sight." As Xenex finished whispering about what they were, the two once more began silently running towerds the palace entrance.
    -------------------------------------
Outside, in the real world, Kyle stood ready. Mary looked as if she was about to collapse. "How much time left?" she yelled.
"Less then a minute. What do ya think is taking them so long?" Kyle yelled back.
"I don't know! They must be having trouble or something!" Both were worried and were resisting the urge to jump in after them. Come on Xenex. You've got a promise to keep.
    -------------------------------------
"Damn it. Why are there so nany people in this palace?" Novek complained as the two of them finished checking the seventh room full of people. Since entering they had discovered room's either empty or full of people. Added onto checking each individual person in the rooms, was the hiding they had to do to avoid being caught. "Stupid eyes. How are we supposed to find them in time and avoid those stupid things?"
"We'll just have to." Xenex replied as he opened another room. "Great, more people. Come on, lets hurry."
Not even ten minutes later did Novek call out. "Xenex! Over here!" Xenex quickly rushed over. Standing in front of him was eightteen of the twenty they had to find. They quickly tied them together but instead of making the rope glow to signal Kyle to pull, Xenex grabbed Novek. "Listen, we can't have Kyle pull these guys just yet."
"Why not? This is almost everyone."
"Because A; we're in a building. They would be slammed against every wall while getting pulled out. And B; how hard do you thhnk it would be for those eye things to notice a flash of white and then eightteen people getting pulled through the air."
"Well then what do we do? We have to get them out first without being noticed but that's gonna be impossible with this many at once."
"You'll do it." Xenex turned and ran off quickly.
Novek was puzzled but before he could argue there was a loud screech. Novek ran out to see his brother attacking the eye's and running down the hall. So that's his plan. Novek thought before rushing back to the group.

Another screech was heard, and another right after it as Xenex attracted attention to himself by slashing at the eyes with his sword. Each time he either killed the eye or got it to follow him. I hope this works. Xenex quickly chanted and fired off a thunderbolt at each of the eyes following him. They all were vaporized on the spot. "Now that Sofra knows I'm here I've gotta rush. Only two left." Xenex began running through rooms as quickly as he could, intent on finding his wife and child.

Chapter Thirty-Three: A Palace Of Nightmares

As Xenex drew attention to himself, Novek had dashed back into the room. Since gravity is lighter here, I think I can pull them outside all at once, then signal Kyle to drag them out. Novek gave a small tug on the rope to make sure it was tight before pulling.
    -------------------------------------
"Not here." A door was slammed open. "Not here either." Three more doors were slammed, each accompanied by a 'not here' remark. Xenex was rushing through the halls. Since he had already attracted the floating eyes that served as Sofra's guards, Xenex paid little heed to stealth. He just killed every eye he saw and continued checking rooms. One thing though was apparent, Sofra's palace was huge. Xenex had been repeating his method for near twenty minutes with no luck. At what seemed to be the thousandth room he stopped for a breather. I'm running out of time. If I don't hurry then either the portal will close or Sofra will have killed us. I just hope Novek got that group out.
    -------------------------------------
Ther was a flash of white as the group began to be pulled away. Novek gave a quick sigh of relief. Since all the guards were chasing Xenex, Novek had no trouble. Though they were a little heavier then expected. But that doesn't really matter now. All that's left is to find Xenex and the last two so we can get out of here. This place gives me the creeps. As Novek turned and rushed back inside, Four pairs of eyes were following his every move.
    "Found him."
    -------------------------------------
Xenex was in the upper levels now. He continued his search, killing any guards and searching every room. Finally he found them. His wife Luna was standing, her eyes closed and expression peaceful. In her arms was a child that by human standards, couldn't be older then two. Ren had an expression on his face as peaceful as his mothers. "My wife. My son." Xenex slowly walked up to them and embraced them. Despite how thier hypnosis prevented them from responding, it was the mere fact he could hold them once more that he cherished. He tied the rope around the two and was about to carry them out when he heard a voice.
"Why do you take my charges?"
Xenex froze. Who said that? He looked around for the source when he noticed an eye flying above. As he was about to attack it, it split open revealing a mouth.
"Answer me, mortal. Why do you take my charges?"
Sofra. He's speaking through the eye. Xenex stared for a moment, contemplating whether or not he should answer. Finally, "I take them because they were stolen from my world before there time. These two are my wife and child. The rest were members of my clan. I want to return the life that was stolen." Xenex left out the fact that he was the one that cut thier lives short.
"I highly doubt that. Afterall, was it not you that sent them to my gates all those years ago?"
How does he know? "You are mistaken. It was not me that killed them."
"Do not try to lie to a god. I can see every memory of anyone within my realm. Your mind has been filled with the memories of killing them, ever since you came here. That is why I had these two seperated from the rest. I wanted to speak with you. Why did you come to get them when it was you that sent them here?"
No use in lying now. "I'm sorry for lying before. I killed them because another had control over me and forced me to. I had been trying to find a way to bring them back and this was the only solution I could find. So please, let me and my brother finish our mission and leave. My family here are the last two, I swear it."
"I keep percise records, I know they are the last. I know how your brother is coming up the hall as I speak as well. But neither of you can leave. You have stolen my charges and killed my pets. Neither of you can leave."
"I was the one that killed the eye creatures. I was the one that caused the others to be pulled out of your realm. Let my brother leave with my wife and child! Don't punish them for my sins!"
    "No, you all stay."
Ugh, arguing is useless. Xenex quickly chanted a spell and fired a lightning bolt, destroying the eye. He quickly picked up Luna and Ren before running out of the room. Just as Sofra had said, Novek was running up the hall when they met up. "You found them! Great, let's get out of here."
"And fast. I just had a talk with Sofra and he doesn't want us to go. He's mad at us for stealing his charges. I tried pleading but that failed. We've gotta hurry!" The two kept running as fast as the could when suddenly the ceiling ahead of them collapsed as a large creature fell through.

The creature had clawed feet, the claws at least three feet long. It stood at a hieght of at least thirty feet. It had a tail as thick as a man's body and twice as long. It's legs and arms were incredably muscular, each looked stong enough to move a mountain with little effort. As for the head it was in the shape of a boars head, three foot tusks coming out from both sides of its mouth. At the top of the head were two horns that spiraled around themselve before sticking out into a sharp point. It's skin black, its body covered in black hairy cloth, and it's eyes glowing the deepest yellow. "You no go. Master say you no go. All die."

"Novek, take Luna and Ren. I want you to run as fast as you can and don't stop for anything."
"And you'll be right behind me. I'm not going to leave you to fight this monster on your own."
"Yes you will. It said master, meaning this is just one of Sofra's enforcers. He's likely to have more on thier way here. If I stay and distract them, you can get away. I'll follow you as soon as I can." Xenex handed over the two to Novek. Novek remained silent, he knew he wouldn't change his brothers mind.
"Ready?" Novek nodded he was. "Then go!" Xenex yelled as he charged at the giant with his sword out. As he got close he jumped to slash at its chest.
Novek ran straight under its legs and kept running without looking back. He had to send those to on thier way, then get back to help his brother. There just wasn't any other option to him.

Final Chapter: Of Promises And Destinies

Novek ran as fast as he could while carrying Luna and Ren. He had to hurry and help Xenex fight thier way out of the palace. I'm not gonna lose you brother. I'm not gonna get everyone back just to lose you. As Novek ran, the smashing behind him seemed to be getting louder. He hoped he wouldn't be too late.

The beast gave out a mighty yell as it swung its massive arm down at Xenex. Without missing a beat, Xenex rolled to the side before lashing out with his sword. The metal cut the beasts arm easily and its green blood leaked from the wounds. But the attacks did nothing but anger the behemoth. It quickly swung its arm, knocking Xenex into a wall. The impact left a small crater. The beast reached down and grabbed the demon, holding him between its giant hands. It laughed as it began squeezing Xenex, crushing his body. Xenex screamed in pain and struggled to get free, but to no avail. His arms were pinned to his sides and the monsters grip was too tight to slip free. So, this is how it ends. At least I brought everyone back. I may not have redeemed myself, but I righted my wrong. That's all I wanted.

Suddenly the beast dropped him and stumbled back, clutching its knee. Xenex fell to the floor gasping for breath. "Get up Demon. Nobody is going to kill you but us." Xenex looked up to see Byron, Vera and Jet. Jet's spear had some of the beasts' blood on it.
"Why," Xenex gasped, "are you here?"
"We got thrown in by your pathetic clan. We want out and you have the way. If we didn't need you then we wouldn't have bothered."
"Now get up and fight Demon!" Vera yelled. As Xenex slowly rose to his feat the beast gave out a loud roar. There was some crashing sounds heard before another beast, identical to the first, came up from the hall behind them. This one though carried a large stone club with him. It laughed and swung the club down at the group. They all quickly moved out of the way as the floor was smashed. "Things aren't going to be easy, now are they?"

Novek had reached the palace gates. He quickly tied Luna and Ren together on the rope and signaled Kyle to pull them to safety. "Now to get my brother." He quickly turned around and rushed back in. He didn't have to go far before a hole in the ceiling appeared. When he looked up and saw the beast, he knew Xenex should be nearby. "Xenex! Drop down through the hole!"

"Did you hear that?" Byron said as he readied his sword.
"Yeah, sounds like my brother." Xenex gave a quick look down the hole. He saw Novek there waving him down. "Jump down! We can get out of here! There's not much time left!" Xenex didn't even pause to consider it.
"Come on!" he said before quickly dropping down. He rolled as he landed to lessen the impact of his jump. Byron jumped next, followed by Vera, then Jet. Novek glared at the other three. "What are they doing here?"
"Long story, but they will help so long we get them out. Now let's go." Xenex explained before running towards the door. Novek just sighed before chasing after his brother. The other three followed suit. They all made it to the door when the entire palace began to shake. A strange black mist had formed in front of them, blocking there path to the door. Xenex froze, as did the others.

"You were told before. You all will stay. Did I not tell you this?" A man walked out through the mist, which vanished behind him. He was about six feet tall with skin that was snow white. He had long black hair that flowed down his back. He didn't seem to have ears and when he opened his mouth, all his teeth were filed to sharp points. His clothes were pure black, they looked like they were from a long past, as if they came from the begining of time. But what had Xenex's attention were his eyes, they were blood red, save for clear blue pupils. "Now I will ask politely; will you stay peacefully, or will I have to kill you?"

Jet was the first to act. "I don't care who you are or what you say, I'm not staying here!" He charged the man with his spear pointed forward.
"No, don't!" Xenex yelled but to late. The man had impaled Jet on a blade that had appeared from out of nowhere. His eyes were wide with shock as he coughed up blood. The man's expression was emotionless. "In your world, death brings you here. In here, death erases your existence, a truly permanent death. Now, lay down your weapons or share his fate." The man ripped his sword from out of Jet and let his body colapse to the ground. It turned to dust in seconds.

"Who are you?" Byron yelled and readied his sword. Vera also readied herself for a battle.
The man chuckled for a moment. "You enter my realm and do not know that answer? Hmph, I am Sofra, God and Guardian of the Dead."
"A little less then ten minutes left." Novek quietly whispered to Xenex. He nodded in reply before readying his sword. Novek drew his a second later. "We've just gotta get by him, then we can escape." Novek said to Byron and Vera. They nodded.

"If you believe you have a chance against a god, then think again. You all have chosen, you will all die." With that Sofra vanished.
"Run!" Xenex yelled as he dashed for the door. Hevdidn't even make it three steps before Sofra appeared in front of him and delivered an attack. Xenex raised his blade, barely saving his life. Byron charged forward and stabbed at Sofra only to have him vanish. He reappeared behind him with a slash but was parried by Novek. Vera tried to punch him but he vanished once more. "It'll take all of us just to stay alive. Stay together and watch each others backs!"
They all began running towards the exit again when Sofra appeared above them. He smiled and held up his hand. A ball of white light formed, its shining light made the hall as bright as day. Sofra simply threw the ball at them before vanishing.
"I got it!" Vera yell as she jumped up. She spun herself, striking the ball with a powerfull kick. However, the ball vanished when she touched it. She landed and quickly looked around for a moment before suddenly dropping to the floor. Xenex ran up and knelt by her. He noticed that she was breathing and instantly knew what happened. "It put her to sleep. Those orbs of light must be how he enchants everybody into thier endless sleep. She won't wake unless we get her out of this world."
"Leave her." Xenex whipped his head to see Byron standing over him.
    "What?"
"Leave her. I'm not about to get stuck here because of her."
"But we can't just leave her. Sofra'll kill her!"
"Nobodies life is more important then my own. I'm leaving her. You want to save her? Then you carry her. But I'm not gonna cover your back." Byron took off running as Xenex cursed him and picked Vera up. Novek ran up and helpped his brother. "We're either going to survive together or die trying."

"You'll die then." Sofra appeared in front of Byron. As he tried to attack the god, Sofra vanished. Only to appear behind him, stabbing him through his heart. Byron turned to dust as Sofra turned to Xenex and Novek. "Not much time left now is there? Your portal closes in... five minutes, by your standards of time. Do you really think you can best a god in his own realm with such little time?" Sofra laughed as he vanished.
Suddenly Xenex grinned. He quickly whispered something under his breath before looking around. His grin grew larger as he turned to his brother. "Take her, I'll guard us."
"How?" Novek asked, though he still took Vera off his shoulders.
"I can see him." Xenex charged out and stabbed what seemed like just air. There was the sound of metal against metal as Sofra appeared, his sword holding back Xenex's. The two began furiously exchanging blows as Novek ran outside the gates with Vera on his back. He quickly tied himself and her to some rope. "Xenex, come on!"

Xenex quick:y jumped back from Sofra and ran for his brother.
"No!" Sofra yelled as he fired multiple white orbs. Xenex dodged each one as he ran. He was about to reach his brother when Sofra appeared in front of him. Before Xenex could react, Sofra shoved one of the white orbs into his chest. Xenex gave a quick swing at him, but he vanished again.
"Xenex!" Novek yelled and was about to come over and get him when Xenex ran up and made the rope flash white before falling to the ground.
"Xenex!" Novek yelled as he and Vera were suddenly pulled into the air. "No!" Sofra walked up to Xenex and laughed. The last thing Novek saw was an orange glow.
    -------------------------------------
Kyle gave the rope one hard tug before Vera and Novek came through the portal. As they did, the portal closed. The eclipse was over, the time limit was up. Mary collapsed on the ground exhausted, Kyle did the same. "We did it."
Novek quickly untied himself and ran back to the seal. He tried putting energy into it but it wouldn't take. "Come on, OPEN! Open up damnit!" He started banging on the rock trying to reopen the portal, though he knew it wouldn't do any good.
    "Novek what's wrong?" Mary asked.
"Xenex... Xenex is still back there! I need to go get him! We have to open the portal back up!"
"But we can't. It only works during an eclipse, and the eclipse is over." Kyle ran up to them as Mary spoke. "We can't get him back, Novek. Xenex is gone." Kyle froze in his tracks when he heard that. Novek dropped down to his knees. "We'll just re-open this next eclipse and get him out of there ok?" Mary suggested.
"It'd be to late. Sofra was about to kill him as I was pulled back. Xenex... my brother is dead." At those words, Kyle took off running, Mary saw him run and was about to call to him but Novek said don't. "Let him go. I'll go talk to him myself."
    -------------------------------------
Kyle was sitting in the shade of a large tree. He had run for ten minutes straight to get here. "You promised you'd return and train me. You promised. Why'd you break your promise?" Kyle said to the sky. He knew it was useless to worry about it, Xenex had probably expected the outcome. Kyle knew this, yet he still was depressed by it.
"You ok?" Novek had walked up without him realizing.
    "I'll be fine."
    "You sure?"
"Yeah." Novek sat down next to him and looked at him.
"Did Xenex happen to say anything to you before we went in there?"
"He promised he'd come back and finish training me. But that's a broken promise. He knew he wouldn't be back. He just wanted to make me feel better since I couldn't go."
Novek smiled, "Yeah that sounds like him. What do you plan on doing now?"
"I don't know. The only thing I had planned to do was train under Xenex and become a warrior. Why?"
"You still wanna be a warrior?"
    "Yeah."
    "Well then I'll train you."
"Won't you be busy with your clan?"
"Well yeah, at first. When I vanished, Xenex became leader. His son is too young to take control of the clan so it'll fall back to me cause I'm here. At first I'll be busy getting everyone settled and back to normal. But then I can devote time to train you."
    "So, is that a promise?"
Novek looked at him for a moment. "Promise."

Preview of Part 2, Chronicles: Royalty

"I need you to do something for me Kyle."
An armored man was running through a dark cave. His breath was coming in bursts, and he kept glancing behind himself.
"There's a place called Deepground, where the demons that don't want to live in regular society like us go. They hate humanity and any demons that live on the surface."
There was at least a hundred different demons chasing the armored man. Each one seemed intent on killing him.
"Normally the demons down there stick to themselves but something new has come up. Rumors of a king, simply called the Demons King. Rumors of this king preparing an army. An army bent on conquering the surface world."
A demon managed to catch up to the armored man and reached for him only to have his hand sliced off as the man kept running.
"I want you to go to the Deepground and investigate these rumors. And don't worry about being discovered. Just keep your armor on at all times. Its pretty common down there, nobody will ask questions."
The armored man saw a light coming from a tunnel slanted upwards. He knew that was his way out.
"Find out if the rumors ars true, and who the king is if they are. If this really is a legitimate threat then we'll go down there and stop it before it reaches the surface."
The man was almost out when three demons reached out and grabbed his legs. They tripped him and began pulling him back, away from the surface. The man pulled out his sword and began cutting the demons off, but for each he cut another took its place.
"Oh and one final thing Kyle, don't get trapped down there. No outsider has ever escaped if they got trapped."
The man began trying to drag himself, demons and all, to the surface. But suddenly a fireball was thrown at the roof of the passage. As the rocks began to crumble and seal the passage, the man screamed as the light vanished.
