I see where your coming from mike, but majority of us had it with him, plus it is kind of rude if you got somone asking you if you speak a different language, it's like if yu were german asking do you speak german because your german. Same goes for every other language. I guess the right word to explain in this situation is he jumps to conclusion of a back ground of somone.

 

But actually that was my point...I can see some 'youthful innocence' in his question about speaking japanese.

I think what he really wanted to know was, 'are you japanese?' He simply may not have the necessary tact to ask in that way.

Although just to make what you're saying precise:

-If I introduced myself as German (hypothetically) and someone asked if I spoke German, it seems like a valid question.
-If someone inferred that I was German (wrongfully or otherwise), from a picture, it's not quite as polite to ask...if you explicitly mean that.


I just feel (/hope/give the benefit of the doubt to) SB simply didn't say what he meant. I do hope I'm correct.


EDIT: PS...I realize that the use of 'good guy' in my previous post is a little bit humerous (even as I posted it!). I just wanted to point out that I do realize the erroneous use...I simply call everyone 'a good guy' regardless of gender. Please take it as a gesture of good faith, and not as any sort of insult and/or ignorance on my part. (Sorry to get paranoid like this lol...but I've accidentally hurt peoples' feelings in the past over things like this)

 

Eh I dp the same thing everyones a guy or guys to me, if it's actual boys then it's boys the femine version of guys is gals and that sounds weird.


Basicly yes, however if I were to look Japanese and asked if I spoke Japanese that would sort of make me upset that my background is that and I can't speak it in a way. I'd find that plain rude.

SB still needs to watch what he posts. Now on subject here, spam lounge or not, off subject is annoying at some points.

 

Ok sorry to drone on...this will be my last off-topic post. I just feel I need to really drive the point home. I feel like blame is being laid incorrectly, that's all.

Let me try to reiterate:

I think then, that my concern is...It's your sensitivity to the issue that shines in that case (which is hypothetical right?) and not the person's rudeness or insensitivity. The person asking wouldn't know a priori whether or not you could speak. Of course if you could speak, you wouldn't feel bad about not speaking and so you'd proudly say "Yes! I can speak Japanese! "

It is only because you would be unable to speak, that the question strikes a nerve. I mean, it's all fine and good if it strikes a nerve, because people have a right to be sensitive about things...

But the person asking does not have control over what your response will be...they're simply making an inquiry. Whether you speak it or not, the person asking it is the same person.

And now to predict what your response might be (this really will be my final post haha).

I get the feeling you might say "But he should know better and avoid taking the risk of hurting my feelings at all." If you did think this...then imagine what life would be like if we avoided all risks. (; We wouldn't know anything!

I mean every time you talk to somebody, suppose you say 'hello' to someone, and that someone had an abusive parent (hypotheticals are fun) who used to say 'hello' in a haunting tone. Then you may upset someone by simply saying hello!

Now you might be thinking about calculated risks...and how it's 'very unlikely that someone would be offended by the word hello.' Unlikely but not impossible! It's a risk we take all the time without even realizing perhaps.

You can't really base your life around calculated risks...because once you attempt to, then you need to create a 'gold standard' or reference. (aka. "Drawing the line" somewhere).


Anyway, I just hope you can see my point...I'll stop being all preachy now

Well teh last two pictures didn't show up, as for the Britany Spears, I can stand wearing skirts, just I don't like skirts, I will wear dresses now and then though. Plus now and then you could wear stalking to keep legs a bit warmer or just deal with the cold and hope goose bumps won't show up. Nice picture though
