That's one of the things I was having difficulty with. Picking abilities based on her personality. I wasn't sure what else to add, short of flight and teleportation.

We should probably have an additional example as for what is considered tier 5. In the movies a Jedi Knight simply has skill with using a lightsaber and enough force sensitivity to move objects around, using it as an extrasensory form of sight, and mind tricks. If we include what video games show us, they also move faster with the force and can use the force to heal themselves. That was my mindset when creating Asuna.

    I'm happy for suggestions.

That post handicap is something I find interesting, to say the least. I was gonna ask about how it works. Regeneration, for example, is said to heal wounds with 1 or 2 posts. Is that consecutive posts? Such as my character injures Ketsu, and then Wayward and Requiem make the next two posts. Is Ketsu's injury healed? Or is it more like my character injures Ketsu and then the wound is healed after your second post regardless of how many posts are made by other people?

So yeah, we should get a clearer example as to what tier 5 is.

  2. The fact that she's non-magical certainly limits her a bit. Personally, I would start by adding an attack ability, such as a flurry of attacks that is hard to dodge, but each hit does a small amount of damage. Another option would be a parry of sorts, where you could attempt to turn an opponent's melee attack against them. Still a third option (while bordering on magical) could be some sort of aerial maneuver, possibly a form of recovery-into-counter-attack, reminiscent of the Aerial Riposte (not the actual name, but named something similar) in the Kindgom Hearts games. Those are the only things I can think of off the top of my head. I hope they helped get the creativity flowing.

Depending on the video game, they can do much more than that. As a reference, check out this page of abilities that the Jedi Knight Class in Star Wars: The Old Republic has: Jedi Knight - Abilities - Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) Database. You could probably consider around Lv 25 being "elite," as above that would likely move into master territory. Still, at the very least that means that things like Force Stasis and Freezing Force would be in play.

All of the post restrictions apply to my posts only. So, for example, say Ketsu takes a minor magical wound. Since that is harder to heal than a flesh wound, it would take two of my posts before it is healed. At the end of my second post, I would make a note saying that the wound regenerated, and he would be fully healed at the beginning of my third post following the attack. I hope this is clear, I understand it's a bit confusing.

I second this... I thought I had a good feel for what tier 5 was, but this thread confused me.

Perhaps it was just the character examples I used that threw people off. Let me try a different approach:

Tier 1 - Average Joe. Average physical ability, access to common weaponry. No magical powers whatsoever.
Tier 2 - Peak/trained human condition. IE - Olympian level physique. Access to more of a modern military issue of weaponry. Still no supernatural abilities.
Tier 3 - Exaggeration of peak human condition. Passive physical abilities/traits that put them above human peak. Low level Psionic capabilities. Magic is derived from weaponry or patron. Technology could boast laser guns and other low-Scifi advances.
Tier 4 - Ability to cast magical abilities without the use of a patron or item/weapon. Access to a variety of basic spellcasting and Psionic abilities.
Tier 5 - General mastery of basic spellcasting (ie - elemental spells, energy blasts etc). Access to such tools as nano-technology and technology that can almost be magical in nature.

We might be pushing it but Ketsu should be in line with a tier 5. As should Vance if I choose to use him.

  4. Ah, very helpful, thank you. Though, I'm not sure what Ketsu's Vampiric abilities count as. It would seem that his Hallow's Eve Magic is fine, but the tiers say nothing about supernatural abilities such as his Regeneration. As long as you think Ketsu's in line with teir 5 and Requiem doesn't pose an argument against him, I'm gonna say he's fine too.

Updated Asuna's abilities a bit. Admittedly she might seem to still be underpowered since I'm having some difficulty keeping her abilities in line with her type of character.

Also I'm going on an out of state family related trip this weekend so I won't really have access to internet until late Sunday night or sometime Monday.

If both Vance and Ketsu are pushing the limits of tier 5 then we already have both teams half decided. If Vance and Ketsu were to be on a team with both of them being on the higher end of tier 5 then that would put Requiem and myself at a disadvantage if Vance and Ketsu have an easier time overpowering our characters. I suppose we could try to balance it by Requiem and myself being very creative with our character's abilities but there would still be an innate advantage for Vance and Ketsu on the same team.

I'm not saying this to say Requiem's character is weaker than these two, but only that nobody has said anything about Requiem's character being too strong. And obviously with me sticking with how I made Asuna, her strength isn't a direct offensive ability set like the other characters.

  6. Glad to see you liked the flurry of strikes idea. The Air Step is cool as well, my first thought is of White from Mounty Oum's new animation, RWBY. Nice ability.

About the Single Stroke Block, the wording of the last part isn't very clear. How easy is it for her to deflect blast radius effects? Will she almost always deflect them, with a chance of her deflecting incorrectly and being harmed, or is it the other way around? Also, when you first describe the ability, you describe it as blocking, not deflecting. Does the ability deflect attacks back at the user (or in any direction as the latter part of the ability implies)? Perhaps it only deflects against explosive effects?

Sorry about the barrage of questions... I just want to understand the ability as clearly as possible.

Finally, regarding Ketsu pushing the envelope of tier 5 (and in the defense of truly random teams), I'm okay with the balancing factor of having Vance and Ketsu on opposite teams, but I still maintain that Ketsu, Vance and Sinna are around the same power level.

So I'm probably gonna use Vance for this. But I'll probably bar him to a smaller assortment of abilities.

  8. I'm still waiting on an explanation for why Ketsu, or Vance for that matter is overpowered. Could I get some clarification on that?

Don't look at me bro. I agree with you that the two are well within the limitations for this battle.

  10. Yeah, that was mostly directed at Requiem, because they were the one who had an issue with the characters in the first place. Though, Req hasn't posted to this thread for at least a week. I think they've been busy lately, but even so, if Req doesn't come in and give us a good reason why the characters are too powerful, we should just assume they are fine and go. At this point, it's 2-to-1, after all.

For starters, the deflecting is simply her swinging her weapon and smacking the attack away like a baseball. I meant for it to be deflecting, but thinking of it as a defensive ability my mind automatically put in block instead of deflect. It is meant to deflect projectile attacks (So for magic attacks picture it like the Link and Ganondorf fights where Link has to hit Ganondorf's attack back at him). Obviously a chance of her deflecting incorrectly is if she misses hitting the attack or (In the case of an explosive attack) she is still within the blast radius. The ability can deflect attacks back at the user if that is the way she hits it. In my mind I'm seeing her swing her weapon to deflect in multiple ways. Swinging like a baseball bat, a simple downward swing, etc. While it is meant for projectile attacks it can be used to repel physical attacks and push back her attacker a bit. The pushback is due to the force she uses to deflect and also why she can't constantly use it. The force involved is too much for continuous use so she simply pushes her enemy back and uses that as a chance to escape.

  12. Okay, so, the ability deflects incoming attacks, mostly projectiles, by swinging her weapon like a baseball bat. This can also be used to deflect melee attacks, in which case it will push the opponent as well. In addition, if an attack's blast radius is large enough, it becomes impossible for her to fully deflect. Finally, the ability fatigues her so that she can't use it over and over.

If that all sounds correct, then I understand. Thanks for the thorough explanation.

Do I need to find Requiem? Or should we just give it a few days go on without him with this as a free-for all if he doesn't show up?

    Need a cough drop there?

Talking about someone always gets them around. So, will we be able to agree on our character choices finally? We've just spent six whole pages discussing and debating.

    Yeah sure.

  17. How very anti-climactic.

That sums it up well enough.

    Fine by me.

  19. So, when are we getting this started then?

As soon as Req decides on a character.

    I'll be using this Broski:
    http://www.khplanet.com/forums/367403-post13.html

As far as his abilities go, he'll have all of his trained/physical abilities.
His magical abilities will include his High Jump, Dash, Elemental Strike, Strike Raid (With only a Thunder elemental variation), gravity push and his Reflection Shield.
