Thanks for the replies guys and that very detailed breakdown from destiny. There are indeed some very good points and more importantly questions being thrown out here, some of which I don't have answers for yet...

Getting Broader
I've heard the arguement of expanding into a general SquareEnix Fan site before and it's appealing... however my key fear is that locking down just one niche i.e. KH and running a tight organised ship around KH hasn't really happened yet...

Also if we go to a broader subject area, there will have to be a change of domain and overall site layout and structure, all things which I wouldn't like to take on unless I really had the backing that everyone was ready and locked into going the distance.

Also I think we could probably cover loads of Square stuff on the site and forums if we wanted. I'm in the process of updating the way content is added to our site. i.e. we won't have a rigid editorial team rather we'll give the ability for any one to submit and share fan content to the main site, under maybe more categories so we can accommodate more general SE stuff too.

A small group of editors will approve and publish the submitted work. I have something similar running on NC and so far it's been doing well.

Chat
With regards to the chat although I'm not a big fan of it, I am willing to try it on a trail basis with the limitation that only vets and elites use it. If they can't use it sensibly then for sure the other members won't either. But it has been a regular request so I say lets try it.

Forum Version Update
We're on the latest version of the 3.X evolution of VB. It's safe secure and works well. 4.X will cost me around $200 and unless it's giving us something in terms of features we can't re-produce on 3.X via coding or a plugin I'm not interested in moving.

So far the argument I've heard is we should upgrade because everyone else is doing it. I don't think we should just do something because everyone else is doing it. But if enough feature requests are made which are only made possible with 4.X then yes I'd research the move and investment.

P.S Although I'm still a little tied up with some other projects I'm winding my work down on them to begin executing some of these changes mentioned above. It will take me 2-3 weeks of my full attention but I'm really excited to bring a new wave of change to the site.... Just bear with me for now as my responses will be every couple of days kind of thing.. But I am watching and thinking about the changes here constantly, even in my sleep

 

Don't worry Summoner, it's really only a trial and we'll see how it goes.. I just want to give the guys who believe it can work a shot.... it may or may not bring something new to the community. We'll see.

 

Just a quick update from me here, I'm still on this and I'm still here incase anyone thinks I've forgotten... Just still tieing up loose ends and developing some code for the new site

 

Thanks everyone for continuously emailing me and sending messages for updates.

I will be moving to setup the NC like submit content functionality by the end of this week. The plugins and features for the forums will be next week.

In terms of design layout, I have not had a chance to look at that, and I'm considering starting a competition once I get the facebook fan page up opening up the design of the site and logo to the greater community.

I'm hoping to launch that effort later this week too..... I know you guys have always wanted more control of the look of the site so due to my inability to find time to do it, seems like the natural choice is for you guys to get involved.
